About this listen

National Book Critics Circle Award winner, Criticism, 2016.

As Ferguson, Missouri, erupted in August 2014 and media commentators across the ideological spectrum referred to the angry response of African Americans as 'black rage', historian Carol Anderson wrote a remarkable op-ed in the Washington Post showing that this was, instead, 'white rage at work. With so much attention on the flames,' she wrote, 'everyone had ignored the kindling.'

Since 1865 and the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, every time African Americans have made advances towards full participation in our democracy, white reaction has fueled a deliberate and relentless rollback of their gains. The end of the Civil War and Reconstruction was greeted with the Black Codes and Jim Crow; the Supreme Court's landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision was met with the shutting down of public schools throughout the South while taxpayer dollars financed segregated white private schools; the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965 triggered a coded but powerful response: the so-called Southern Strategy and the War on Drugs that disenfranchised millions of African Americans while propelling presidents Nixon and Reagan into the White House.

Carefully linking these and other historical flash points when social progress for African Americans was countered by deliberate and cleverly crafted opposition, Anderson pulls back the veil that has long covered actions made in the name of protecting democracy, fiscal responsibility, or protection against fraud, rendering visible the long lineage of white rage.

Compelling and dramatic in the unimpeachable history it relates, White Rage will add an important new dimension to the national conversation about race in America.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Pamela Gibson perfectly conveys the insightful research and writing in this book about civil rights in the U.S. by an Emory University historian. Anderson contends that when African-Americans make even the slightest progress, a subtle, almost invisible, white rage in the form of opposition reverses what little progress has been made. An example is the current suppression of Black votes under the guise of voter fraud prevention. Gibson's delivery registers rage and compassion where appropriate. No one - from Lincoln to Trump - escapes criticism. Hard truths and supporting citations are clearly stated, leaving no confusion for listeners. Also, Gibson ably presents Anderson's unexpected humor, for example, when she talks about the current paralysis of the U.S. Senate." (AudioFile Magazine)

Every time there is an advancement by Black Americans, there is a violent, political, and normalized reaction by the white hegemony. This book unwinds its thesis through critical moments and movements in Black history, and their repercussions. The author brings passion and a little bitterness to the argument. I have trouble arguing against the tone-it is justified. I am white, I found the book illustrative and informative of events glossed over in my high school history courses.

Heartbreaking summary of 1863 to now

The superb organization and presentation of this book's information can only be matched by the extensive research that so obviously is at the book's foundation.
I implore all to take the time to digest what Carol Anderson has documented. Much more than just an accounting of history, this book provides the proper context in which historic incidents and lesser known, pernicious strategies should be perceived.
-Unadulterated "American History."

I would recommend to anyone who is transcend themselves above the extreme racial divides present in modern America. Racism and bigotry are not antiquated ideaolgies from the past. These beliefs have simply evolved to modern methods of oppression. Anyone who is committed to creating a unified nation for ALL Americans should learn their history so the cycles of oppression may end.

Very enlightening across racial groups!!!

This book, although hard to read at times, should be essential for every American. I took two African American studies courses in college and so much of what Dr. Anderson put in this book were stories untold in our history books. This is a summation of all that is essential in understanding our history, American history, and the subtle and known hate that persists.

A must read!

...The spoken truth about Black struggle in the U.S.A. The government of the United States still continue aiding and abetting the disfranchisment of black people from the time off chattel slavery to emancipation, to reconstruction to the Jim Crow South and until today. While there has been "progress" in civil rights for black people. The white rage continue to find ways to attack, undermine and nullify those "rights" as black people are seen as lazy and waiting for government hand outs paid for by white tax payers dollars and as such, not deserving equal protection under the law. The white rage machine, costs the Untied States billions of dollars each year, spent on oppressing blacks and other minorities, in mass incarceration, voter supression and the war on drugs. It is unfathomable, that in today's societies blacks are portrayed as brutal and lazy. Even during the time of slavery, black people, were the ones doing all the work and yet, they are the ones who have the reputation of being lazy. Black People, the recipient of rape, murder and other atrocities at the hands of Whites are the ones with the reputation of being brutal. White supremacist ideology is the single biggest obstacle in the thrive for equality and justice for black people in the United States...

As an American and a non-African-American, I was deeply saddened by all of the accounts of this tome.

One can only hope that decency, brotherhood and healing can follow up these tragic events. It sounds cliché but it truly starts with educating our own children respect

I normally set aside time in the car to listen to books, that's how I've been doing it for over a year now. this is one of the very few books and that I found myself listening to at all times of the day. in the shower, cooking, getting ready for work...
the entire time I've just kept thinking over and over how much I want to share this with some of my friends the hypothetical conversation keeps playing out in my head, "Now you'll understand where I'm coming from."

This book is brilliant, and helps the reader understand more fully the overt and covert ways racism is still moving in America today, founded on previous attempts to quash human and constitutional rights for black people. This should be compulsory reading for school.
