About this listen
“An ingeniously dark comic thriller about greed, gluttony, and murder that is destined for the big screen.” (Best Thrillers)
Aimee Trapnell reluctantly leaves her apartment on Manhattan’s Central Park West to return to her childhood home in Georgia for her father’s 90th birthday. Also on hand are her two brothers, wily Marsh and ne’er-do-well Trainor. With a 40 billion dollar inheritance at stake, they’re willing to do whatever it takes to make the old man happy.
To their shock they learn that what their father wants for his birthday is to kill someone. He doesn’t care who it is. He just wants to know what it’s like to commit murder.
Betrayal, double-dealing, and fast-paced action set the Trapnells on a collision course with an unexpected villain. Their journey takes them from the swamps of Georgia, to Italy’s glittering Amalfi coast, to rugged Yellowstone National Park.

I’ve fallen in love with a man called Sam. And he’s perfect, just perfect. It’s a whirlwind romance. And when our dream home falls through just before our wedding, we decide to move in with his parents. He says his mother, Evelyn, is the sweetest person. But I’m not so sure. She’s obsessively protective over Sam. She wants to know where he is all the time. She wakes us up in the morning, bustling into our room like he’s a small child, not a grown man. She doesn’t want me to be alone with him.

Story
Each December, the faculty of Balaclava Agricultural College goes wild with holiday decorations. The entire campus glitters with Christmas lights, save for one dark spot: the home of Professor Peter Shandy. But after years of resisting the school's Illumination festival, Shandy suddenly snaps, installing a million-watt display of flashing lights and blaring music perfectly calculated to drive his neighbors mad. Then the horticulturalist flees town, planning to spend Christmas on a tramp steamer. He returns home to find his lights extinguished - and a dead librarian in his living room.

Story
Callie was living in a ten-acre home in the stunning Adirondacks with her husband. She missed her son, who was away at college, but she was coping pretty well with her empty nest. Then, the nightmare began. Her husband Abel skidded off the road into an icy lake. His truck hit a tree and plunged into the frigid water below. Now, this once-vital 43-year-old carpenter lies in a coma, surrounded by bleeping machines and the hushed rumble of the ward at Pearl Medical Center in Vermont. The police say it was an accident, but the details remain murky.

Story
It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

At once odd and enjoyable
When the narrator began speaking, I was very put off by the pumped up enthusiasm and energy with which he spoke. The cadence was odd also. Where there should have been periods at the ends of sentences there were commas or even question marks. I thought I wouldn’t listen to this odd treatment of the text for long. But I got caught up in the story, which was really pretty good. Finally, I settled into Mr. Greene’s reading. I enjoyed the book quite a bit. I’d be open to hearing another of Ms Hand’s books read by Mr. Greene in his curious style.

Couldn't get past the third chapter
It's possible that this book gets better farther in, but the first three chapters were just tedious, and the narration made it worse. I gave up on it, and so I don''t recommend it.
