About this listen

Zach Adams is one of the best detectives in the country. Nicknamed Cowboy, he serves on a federal task force that has a single mission: to hunt down Dominic Abend, a European gangster.

After a brutal murder gives them a lead, Zach feels like he's finally on Abend's trail. But things get complicated and very, very weird. Zach is beginning to suspect that Abend's evil goes beyond crime - perhaps to the edge of the supernatural.

In a centuries-old forest under a full moon, a beast assaults him, cursing him forever. In the aftermath Zach is transformed into something horrible - something deadly. Now the good cop has innocent blood on his hands. He has killed - and he will kill again - in the form of a beast that can't be controlled or stopped.

Bad title, great book

Tough guy cop novels are generally not my thing but Klavan knows how to tell a story. Defiantly worth a credit.

Even better than I expected.

I’m a fan of Klavan’s podcast and of Another Kingdom, and he says this is his best book. I haven’t read any of his other work, but this one is very good. I listened to it over a period of a few days because I couldn’t turn it off. This man knows how to write noir fiction and the werewolf twist was fantastic! Well done, Klavan.

Fun and Wild Supernatural Noir

My first time consuming any of Klavan's work. The narrative was gripping, suspenseful and funny.
I stumbled across this book on accident and had no idea it was a noir, in a sense, but then, aren't most cop stories? If you like supernatural melodrama, procedural crime trappings, and a bit of romantic intrigue, you'll probably love this book. I had a great time with it and couldn't put my headphones down until I'd finished it.

Weak Title. Fantastic Book!

I became hooked on Andrew Klavan novels after reading 'The Great Good Thing' When it comes to writing, the author has the master's touch. His command of the English language is suburb. As a narrator, he has inherited his famous father's gift of using his voice to bring the characters to life. Klavan's natural voice is mesmorizing. While elements of his belief system are subtely woven throughout this novel, the author is not 'preachy' nor is he attempting to evangelize which made the book all the more fascinting to me. The reader will find themes of good vs. evil. redemption, salvation & forgiveness. I found that reading The Great Good Thing first added more depth to Werewolf. Klavan walked a dark path in his youth, His many internal struggels gave rise to his writing voice and a place of peace and sanity. As a fan of the horror genre, I would love to see the movie version of this novel.

Supernatural noir

Very good story. The author reads the story with the grit of a private eye or crime reporter.

A Great Book That Could Use a Better Title

The book truly is good, it's a great listen with a solid story and brilliant writing.
If you have an extra credit or the book is on sale, then this is a good option for what you should buy.
I've seen a few reviews with people wanting and thinking there'll be a second installment, and while I haven't seen any update on there being another installment, I personally don't see how another book, that doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy another book.
Without spoilers, you get a complete story here, and I don't see a purpose and having book.
My biggest fault in the book is the length. I wish it would be longer to fill out some plot threads that could've gone further.
I enjoyed some the references and ideas that Andrew took inspiration from (the first one I thought of was; An American Werewolf in London), and I enjoyed the themes in the book, something that I want to take inspiration of.
However, it's also these themes that I wish that was also explored more. I thought that the religion aspect was very well executed, and find this to be something that typically isn't done so subtly to this great of effect. Religion is something that was used to help explain Zach's character, and that's great, but I wish that religion came more into effect in some aspect.

Overall, great book, great story, but I think it could've been fleshed out more. I don't see a need for a sequel, but it would be welcomed.

Awesome book

They should make this book into a movie. Andrew Klavan never disappoints. Great work.

Wonderful romp & better than the title suggests.

The title doesn’t do the story justice. I enjoy Michael Connelly and John Grisham. Here, a hard boiled detective is thrust into tracking a relic with dire consequences even he doesn’t believe. The werewolf element is handled with gritty flair. This was a fun book read by the author.
