About this listen

What difference does it make that Jesus was Jewish?

In this unabridged audio download of Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus, Lois Tverberg challenges listeners to follow their Rabbi more closely by reexamining his words in the light of their Jewish context. Doing so will provide a richer, deeper understanding of his ministry, compelling us to live differently, to become more Christ-like. We'll begin to understand why his first Jewish disciples abandoned everything to follow him, to live out his commands.

Our modern society, with its individualism and materialism, is very different than the tight-knit, family-oriented setting Jesus lived and taught in. What wisdom can we glean from his Eastern, biblical attitude toward life? How can knowing Jesus within this context shed light on his teachings for us today?

In Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus we'll journey back in time to eavesdrop on the conversations that arose among the rabbis of Jesus' day, and consider how hearing Rabbi Jesus with the ears of a first-century disciple can bring new meaning to our faith. And we'll listen to Jewish thinkers through the ages, discovering how ideas that germinated in Jesus' time have borne fruit. Doing so will yield fresh, practical insights for following our Rabbi's teachings from a Jewish point of view.

Excellent and readable

Lois Tverberg's excellent scholarship gives great insight into the scriptures. The reader for this book would have done better if she was familiar with Hebrew pronunciation. Some other words and place names were mispronounced also.

Must Read

The contextual information of how Jesus’ words and teaching would have sounded to his contemporary listeners is so helpful to understanding the text. And the wisdom of rabbinical interpretation of the Old Testament is also very helpful. Reading with Jewish perspective is illuminating!

Obsessed

Listening to this book was a true joy. Lois Tverberg's writing draws you in and educates without boring you. I've long since been a fan of Pam Ward's narration style and wasn't disappointed this time either. Pam puts just enough emotion into her reading that it feels human, but not so much that it feels like a dramatization. This was a VERY dynamic combination!

Great insight of Jewish culture & Jesus our Rabbi!

I love how this brings out the Jewish mindset, so different than our Grecko-Roman culture of the west. God's heart and mind are beautifully displayed in this revelation of stories and revelations.

Excellent!

I LOVED this book! Every Christian needs to read it (especially pastors) to fully understand the background of Jesus' life and culture. Her explanation of the idioms used in Jesus' day were excellent! I've always thought about "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light" scripture as one that refers to keeping what your eyes look at as pure, which we should, of course, but that is not what Jesus was saying! Having a "good eye" in Jewish culture refers to being generous!! When you are generous, it is saying you are pure! This is just one of the many jaw-dropping explanations she gives.
