Enjoyed this second installment
I enjoyed listening to this second installment in the Empire of Bones Saga.
New adventures and not a rehash of events in the first novel--the story moves forward. A new threat, in addition to the Pale Ones. Plenty of action and a good measure of intrigue. My only minor concern was the focus on Princess Kelsey, learning to control and deal with her implants. It seemed to be too much of a focus in the early parts of the novel. It might be that I just enjoyed the storyline more when it focused on Commander Mertz.
The narrator again did a top job.
Looking forward to the next installment. In the mean time, I will listen to book 1 and 2 again.

Awesome Scifi, A Great Book 2
This was the second book and the series and just as good as the first. I really like this series and would recommend it to anyone. This book picks up right where the last left off.
In this book, not only do we get to learn more about the Pale Ones and where they came from, but the main characters also face a new threat from within the government of their new allies.
The narrator did just as well as the last book and definitely earned the 5 stars I gave her.
I requested and received a free copy of this audiobook from the author, publisher, or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review. I was NOT required to write a positive review and this reflects my honest opinion of the work.

Better than I had hoped!
I purchased the first book because I listen to the Dead Robot Society podcast. It captivated my attention and pulled me along better than expected.
When it was finished I HAD to find out what happened next. Veil of Shadows pulled me into the characters lives like I was adventuring long with them.
At the time of this review, book 3 isn't yet in audio. I will just have to read it myself imagining the superb voices that Veronica provided in her masterful performances.
I'll will be ordering the third book right away. I can't wait to find out what happens next!

I only had one issue with it, and it was small. Re
Any additional comments?
I have come to associate Mixon with some great character twists. He doesn't disappoint with this book. The problems from the first book, Empire of Bones, still linger in this novel, but things have developed and expanded to encompass even more of an amazing setting.
My only (small) gripe is that Princess Kelsey's adjustment to her new abilities seems mostly resolved a tiny bit too quickly for my taste. It's not a huge issue, but... I can't go into too much without giving spoilers. I'll just say that once there's a breakthrough, things got answered too fast for my taste. But otherwise, this book was phenomenal. I can't wait to read the next one!

Trouble found in the kingdom they found.
What did you like best about this story?
I got to thinking about this book because I can't find the words to express how much I really, truly enjoyed this book/series thus far. The question arose: How do you share when you simply love a book? What was it that drew me in? I don't know. Everything.
The characters are ones I really felt I became close to; Kelsey, Jared, Talbot, and many more. There are characters I don't like, but that's because of who they are and what they are doing. These characters are well written and I just want to scream they are bad to all to stop the troubles that will come. These characters spike my worry and suspense for when they will be found. But I love how our crew fights on and get better with each chapter and event. They never stop, having the determination to keep going.
The setting. I like the unknown of space. The troubles that could linger out there, waiting to find our characters. I like that there is action and fighting to go with it. This book is set in Pentagar and the systems around, which we have visited when attacking the Pale Ones. But we also see a bit more as we have a small crew land on a planet.
The plot. Wow. There is trouble in the paradise of Pentagar. There is always a threat to the throne and it crosses with what Jared, Kelsey, and their crew is trying to accomplish. Oh how things get complicated. We also are looking for the main AI system that sends commands to the Pale Ones. This needs to be found and stopped to stop the Pale Ones making more ships and soldiers like them. But what is found with doing this could open doors to more information! Yes!
The characters interact and are smart. They relate to their surroundings and adjust for them too. There's action and information. All the things I enjoy and draw me in.
So, to answer my previous question, this story/series (so far) has everything I love in one nice, neat package. Sweet find!
Have you listened to any of Veronica Giguere’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Veronica is the voice of our crews once again. In this case of a vast crew, Veronica shines. I love listening to her as she gives me different tones, personalities, and emotions with each character relating to the moment they are in. She easily slips into the persona of each character, and the event they are living through so we can feel the emotions as well as hear them in her voice. Veronica gives the space opera a fourth dimension to absorb with the story.
Any additional comments?
We start in a little over a week from where we ended with Empire of Bones. I'm glad for that as I wanted to see Kelsey in her recovery! And there is plenty happening to keep our attention, with the new Empire and troubles they have, creating a fully functioning ship for Jared and crew to continue on, and finding a way to stop the Pale Ones from attacking again. Wow! It all fits together in a wonderful harmony as we explore with Kelsey and Jared, learning about the new worlds.

Great book, very fun.
If you could sum up Veil of Shadows in three words, what would they be?
Very techno
Who was your favorite character and why?
The princess, I liked her attitude. Although I hope she toughens up a bit in the future and takes more of a command role since she is the highest ranking person in the story.
Which character – as performed by Veronica Giguere – was your favorite?
She does Jared and some of the marines very well. The princess voice isn't bad, but some of the marines voice you could forget it's a woman behind the voice.
Any additional comments?
Ok, I'm going to write a little about what happened in the first book, if you haven't read it, you shouldn't be reading this review.
Having said that, this book was a bit better than the first. I really liked the Princess in this story and personally feel that she's taken over the story. The Brother, Jared, isn't all that interesting. He also doesn't seem to have much insight into war.
Again, the princess is a really fun character; I hope she grows a bit more of a backbone considering she's a princess.
I think the technology has become a lot more interesting than the first. Mixon does a really good job describing the technology without info-dumps.
The only downside to the story was the overpowered feel of the technology. I didn't feel like they were in enough trouble at any one point, nor any short-comings of the technology. Besides that, I really liked the story and look forward to getting the third book.
