About this listen
"I'm often asked why I still do criminal defense. My response is because the stories are the best. Richard Stanley has proven adage to be true ten times over. This is a fascinating story told in masterful fashion that is riveting and entertaining." (Mark Geragos, American Criminal Defense Attorney)
“It takes a lot of balls and/or stupidity to rob a bank. But it takes real grit to make it through prison and come out the other side with a better outlook on life and without a face tattoo. Richard Stanley is by far one of the most fascinating people I've ever interviewed. You'll love this book!” (Adam Carolla, Comedian, The Adam Carolla Show, The Man Show, Loveline)

The Wu-Tang Clan are considered hip-hop royalty. Remarkably, none of the founding members have told their story - until now. Here, for the first time, the quiet one speaks. Lamont “U-God” Hawkins was born in Brownsville, New York, in 1970. Raised by a single mother and forced to reckon with the hostile conditions of project life, U-God learned from an early age how to survive. And surviving in New York City in the 1970s and 1980s was no easy task - especially as a young black boy living in some of the city’s most ignored and destitute districts.

This isn't some "Rah, Rah" bullshit book that's designed to make you feel good about having a f--ked up life. I wrote this book to show those of you out there that are in the struggle, what's possible if you work for it. Nothing in life is free. Everything costs money or time. Allow me to save you both by listening to this book. Some of the stories you will hear in this book will be hard to believe, but they are true nonetheless. I've replayed many of these scenes and scripts in my mind 1,000 times, trying to figure out how in the hell things went down the way they did.

Prompted by a dead-end retail job and a vague desire to increase the amount of justice in his hometown, Jason Hardy became a parole officer in New Orleans at the worst possible moment.
