About this listen

INSTANT #1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER • A rollicking history of England’s kings and queens from Arthur to Elizabeth I, a tale of power, glory, and excessive beheadings by award-winning British actor and comedian David Mitchell

“Clever, amusing, gloriously bizarre and razor sharp. Mitchell [is] a funny man and a skilled historian.”―The Times

Think you know the kings and queens of England? Think again.

In Unruly, David Mitchell explores how early England’s monarchs, while acting as feared rulers firmly guiding their subjects’ destinies, were in reality a bunch of lucky bastards who were mostly as silly and weird in real life as they appear today in their portraits.

Taking us back to King Arthur (spoiler: he didn’t exist), Mitchell tells the founding story of post-Roman England up to the reign of Elizabeth I (spoiler: she dies). It’s a tale of narcissists, inadequate self-control, middle-management insurrection, uncivil wars, and a few Cnuts, as the English evolved from having their crops stolen by the thug with the largest armed gang to bowing and paying taxes to a divinely anointed king.

How this happened, who it happened to, and why the hell it matters are all questions that Mitchell answers with brilliance, wit, and the full erudition of a man who once studied history—and won’t let it off the hook for the mess it’s made.

A funny book that takes history seriously, Unruly is for anyone who has ever wondered how the British monarchy came to be—and who is to blame.

Critic reviews

“Clever and amusing . . . gloriously bizarre . . . razor sharp . . . People who have never before picked up a history book will read and enjoy this one.” The Times

“David Mitchell brings a delightfully contrary and hilariously cantankerous eye to the history of the English monarchy, offering a jewel of an insight or a refreshing blast of clarifying wit on every page. Unruly is informative, illuminating, and very, very funny.” —Jesse Armstrong, writer and creator of Succession

“A sardonic, endlessly funny update to the classic 1066 and All That.Kirkus Reviews

Best book that I have listened to all year. To learn and laugh at the same time is a tremendous gift.

Completely historical. Completely hysterical.

I have an unfortunate mix of a huge passion for history and a terrible memory, but David Mitchell’s book has helped the facts stick for me. He manages to humanize the Kings and Queens and put flesh on the bones, so to speak. I learned a lot more from this book than many other more serious (and boring) history books. 10/10.

Excellent

David Mitchell’s research and acerbic reasoning for this book flows. To date this is his best effort. Instead of pure snark of his previous undertakings he has given us some meat to sink our teeth into. This historical review is on par with those from Bill Bryson. Bravo

A Polished Endeavor

David Mitchell has no respect for anyone, not the royals, not historians, definitely not the reader of this book. It's a retelling of familiar history without any regard for what people will think about it and as such, is an absolute must for your collection.

No Respect for Anyone

History sprinkled with comedy, great mix. The perfect topic for someone like David Mitchell to apply his own sense of humor to.

David Mitchell is the King of Comedy

Best book I've listened to all year, though it could do without the left-wing political lectures from time to time.

Amazing Delivery

This survey of England's rulers from the fictional Arthur (though Mitchell prefers to call him a lie) to the last of the Tudors is at the same time delightfully irreverent and full of Mitchell's trademark rants (he actually spends several minutes at the beginning of the chapter on William I complaining about the death of James Bond, but this shouldn't surprise anyone who knows Mitchell's comedy). I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys medieval history but doesn't take the topic too seriously to laugh at it.

Hilarious history

David Mitchell + British History, you couldn’t pry it out of my cold dead hands! I was so excited when I saw this on a 2023 release list and it did not disappoint. The juxtaposition of history and David’s sarcastic dry wit are a perfect blend…if you’re into that sort of thing. (I very much am)

Fantastic!

This book was absolutely outstanding . I literally laughed out loud. It was so enjoyable well researched, and really informative . I can’t stress how much you will enjoy his story telling if you are history buff even if you are just a dabbler of history..

My favorite book this year
