Désireux de prouver sa largeur d’esprit, le général Ivan Iliitch Pralinski, rempli d’idéal mais également d’orgueil, s’invite à la noce d’un modeste fonctionnaire. La série de catastrophes découlant de cette très mauvaise idée est l’occasion d’une farce irrésistible qui, par son impertinence caustique, annonce déjà la révolution. Grâce à une ironie mordante, Dostoïevski dénonce la médiocrité des hauts fonctionnaires, l’hypocrisie des Libéraux.
