About this listen
This audiobook is Ruswa's masterful retelling of the life of a courtesan of Lucknow. Known for her charm, wit and beauty, Umrao Jaan was also a talented poet, dancer and a singer.
Rich in historical detail, the audiobook transports us in old Lucknow, where decadence was nothing more than a part of day-to-day life.
Please note: This audiobook is in Hindi.

Book is better then both the movies made on it. Beautifully narrated. It was a pleasure listening to it.

Excellent but…
Very well read!
My complaint is that the text isn’t quite the original Urdu text. Sometimes it’s just potentially helpful additions (difficult Urdu words are followed by a “yaani + Hindi word) but sometimes the departures are a bit more significant. Still it’s largely the original text. I really enjoyed the playful yet perfectly enunciated narration.

Better than any movie based on the book
I can relate more with the protagonist in the book Vs any characters played by the bollywood actresses. Umrao Jaan is so grounded and real in the book. She describes herself as a woman of wisdom and experience. This woman certainly carved her own path instead of making herself yet another victim of circumstances.
