Als Meron Mendel vor zwanzig Jahren nach Deutschland kam, stellte er überrascht fest, welche Bedeutung Israel im öffentlichen Diskurs hat. Nahezu alle, mit denen er sprach, konnten sehr klare Positionen zu Israel und seiner Politik formulieren. Daran hat sich bis heute nichts geändert: Die Haltung zu Israel ist für viele Deutsche konstitutiv in ihrer politischen Positionierung.

Gehört Israel zur deutschen Staatsräson? Darf man mit BDS-Aktivisten reden? Sollten radikale palästinensische Positionen Raum bekommen in deutschen Medien? Was steckt hinter diesen Fragen, die im Land der Täter so leidenschaftlich diskutiert werden?

Es geht in diesem Buch nicht um Israel und auch nicht um den Konflikt mit den Palästinensern – es geht darum, wie in Deutschland der Nahostkonflikt verhandelt wird, in der Politik und in den Medien, unter Linken, unter Migranten und unter Juden. Es geht um: den deutschen Israelkomplex.

very much needed…

a critical and controversial book about how we can learn to listen and speak, agree and disagree and more importantly communicate with each other about the current hot topic in Germany and internationally, Israel. Very intelligently and thoughtful written.

It gets increasingly interesting

At first I had reservations about the book and wondered whether it would be an Israel bashing read from someone who left the country, but it got a much better and more interesting look at many sides along the way. The reader is a bit dispassionate and it helped me to increase the listening speed a little.
