About this listen

"I just wanted to be normal, but the day college started a supernatural world opened up. Now I don't know who to trust...or even if I'll survive the night."

A new urban fantasy series from the award-winning screenwriter of ground-breaking BBC TV series Spirit Warriors.

Marley Gray is just an ordinary girl when she moves to a new city to start college. She doesn't know that magic even exists, much less that she is the descendant of one of the most powerful witches to have ever walked the earth. As far as she knows, she has classes to sign up for, parties to attend, and an overprotective father to avoid.

Along the way, Marley discovers roommate Cassie might just be the oddest - if richest - girl she's ever met. Then there's Eve, the older girl with a mysterious past who hides her true face under layers of makeup and a bitchy attitude. Thank God for Tyler, who seems nice even though she's just suffered the worse kind of loss that anyone can.

When a night out ends with them all thrown together for the first time, something happens that no one expected. Something magical. And suddenly, they discover they each have been gifted with strange new powers - but why? And who is the mysterious, good-looking stranger who seems to know far more than he is telling them?

In no time, the girls find themselves in a desperate race against a powerful enemy who - in his centuries-old quest for revenge - could destroy not only the city of Boston, but quite possibly the world.

Can they work together to overcome their demons before all hell breaks loose?

Written like your favorite CW or Netflix show, expect thrills, heart-racing romance, as well as epic twists and turns that will keep you guessing!

Saving the world has never been this twisted!

Awesome series!

I listened to this night after night until I finished all 11 books and I cannot wait for the next book in the series! The narrator does a fantastic job with all the voices and emotions. The books are well-written with diverse, fully-developed characters. There's a ton of action and supernatural elements. I'd actually love to see this made into a TV series. Jo Ho is a new author to me. I first read/listened to her Chase Ryder series and moved on to this one fairly quickly. I'll definitely be purchasing more of her work.

Twisted Magic

This volume contains the first 11 books in the series and does end on a cliff hanger. Overall I enjoyed the story. Each of the 4 girls has their own story as well as their story together and the author does a fantastic job blending their journey's together. Cassie's insecurities grate on my nerves however I understand why the author wrote her this way. The narration is perfect in pacing and distinguishable character voices. There is alot going on in this series but the story is always moving forward and kept my interest through out. My only negative is the cliff hanger ending. I prefer that an author note in the description that it ends on a cliff hanger, I am not a fan of them and will normally wait for the full series to be out before purchasing. That being said this is definitely worth the read for fans of YA magical/fantasy/paranormal and I look forward to the next volume.

Twisted Magic

What a good book! Ok, well, I guess that would be bookS because this volume contains 11! That's almost 30 hours of listening, and I can happily say that I was entertained enough to do all 30 hours over the course of just a few days. Every time I had to turn it off, I looked forward to turning it back on again. The writing is very good, and really digs into the background of each of our main girls. I really felt I understood their motivations for the things they did which definitely adds to the story. With the story arc being so expansive, there is no rushed feeling to the telling. The narration is great and suits the characters very well. In my opinion, this volume is well worth the purchase! I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Great, great story

I really enjoyed this story and do recommend it if you like fantasy/paranormal with a little YA romance mixed with action, horror and intrigue. The story continued to move along at the perfect pace to hold my attention and keep me listening, and Allyson Voller does a wonderful job bringing life to these characters.

I have read and listened to other works by Jo Ho and enjoyed these stories just as much! The only issue I had is that these girls find they have powers, truly magical powers and they are more concerned about going to class and keeping up their grades than trying to understand their powers. Doesn't seem like anyone, especially a young adult, would not be obsessed with understanding or learning more. Regardless, I can't wait for the rest of the series!!

LOVED IT!

I loved it! The narration was great and kept me entertained. If you like tv programs like the vampire diaries then you'll enjoy this series. The author does a great job with the character builds and plot. Each episode ends with a cliffhanger that will keep you wanting more. This was not my first book by this author and definitely not my last. I look forward to reading more of her books. Decent Urban Fantasy, only Part 1 of a Long Story

Twisted Magic is an intriguing and engaging story. Recommend to fans of Urban Fantasy with female protagonists and patience on how the story rises and plays out.

Pros: The narrator does a good job of presenting the story and engaging the listener with the character's emotions through tone of voice. The story shifts focus not just to follow the four main protagonists, but also certain support characters and even the primary antagonist (but without revealing so much of the antagonist's specific plans to ruin the mystery). A lot of the plot twists are ones you see coming, but some of the twists are definitely not what the average listener will be expecting. The characters are believable and relatable to a decent degree.

Cons: While this is billed as a collection of the first 11 books (and technically is by the way they were apparently published), it is really just Part 1 of a longer book/story and does not actually reach the climax of any of the issues (main or side) facing the characters. This part ends on a cliffhanger, as do all of the books within the collection. While the characters are largely relatable, there are times you may want to scream at the protagonists for not just talking about an issue so that they can progress in dealing with their issues.

Overall, an enjoyable listen, although if you can't stand cliffhangers wait until the series is finished before picking them ALL up.

Way to go!

This set starts out with 4 girls going off to college, nothing else strange going on in their lives. Things don't stay that way for long though. A seemingly normal night at a college party changes the girls forever. As the story continues, real world problems are addressed in a relatable way. I personally connected with the girls through these issues and was rooting for them. I can't wait to hear more from them!!

Tv show in my head

This is the first to eleventh books I’ve read/listened to by this author and I cant wait for more. I’ve read that these books are set up like tv episodes, and if that’s true, I’d agree. I also agree this would make an awesome tv series. Each book has a progression to the story with the ending being unresolved til the next book. I’m glad I had the box set and could listen to the first eleven all in one go.
The storyline is entertaining, the characters well written, and each one comes into her own while learning to work together and deal with their personal faults or secrets. Even the bad guy has a depth to him that is yet to be realized. The publisher’s summary says enough, I won’t reiterate.

This is the sixth to seventeenth books I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Allyson Voller ) and I would gladly listen to another. I hope she narrates the rest of the books in this series. She has a great style, comfortable cadence and a great variety of character voices to which she imparts personalities.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

Reminded Me of Pretty Little Liars, But Better

I have no idea why it reminded me so much of that show, but it did. Maybe because it was four girls with such different things going on in their lives, so many secrets they kept from each other, but, I really felt like I was listening to a supernatural version of that show. That being said, I loved it. The narrator was fantastic, and the story didn't include a lot of unnecessary stuff. It was straight up story the whole time. This is not the kind of book that you let your mind wander on. You will definitely miss something if you do. I was so disappointed when the story ended. I was especially disappointed in how it ended. There is definitely a cliffhanger there. And, with no release date in sight for the next bookset, you will be left feeling anxious for a long time. I'm hanging in there, though. I can't wait to see what happens next.
