About this listen
Born in East Saint Louis to a drug-addicted mother who died when he was eight years old, author Orvin Kimbrough chronicles his early years through foster care, orphanages, physical and sexual abuse, hunger, and poverty. He could have joined a gang. He could have become a teen father. He could have fallen into drugs and the violence of the streets. He could have ended up in prison. He could have been shot dead.
But he rose above it all to become a prosperous leader in the Saint Louis business and nonprofit communities. Instead of succumbing to life on the streets, Kimbrough sought the one thing that would redeem him from that dismal, expected fate—education. This is the story of a young man who, despite all the forces that worked against him, fiercely determined to make a better life for himself, and is resolute about showing others the way.

A must read about success through an impossible situation.
The first chapters of Orvin’s upbringing by an addicted mother and then an abusive foster/kinship placement are hard to hear. He brought the circumstances that many youth in impoverished areas face to life through his story. His determination to succeed and his accomplishments are inspiring. I have already recommended this book to several people. He was so honest and vulnerable, especially as someone in the public eye.

A compelling read
This isn't just a book. This is a revelation of a soul. In his moving memoir, Orvin Kimbrough shares with us deeply personal details of his life as a youth impacted by tragic decisions of adults he should have been able to trust and a life fueled by a desire to achieve the seemingly impossible as he matured into manhood. Orvin's memoir is a testament to the indomitable nature of the human spirit. While emotionally difficult to read at times, it's equally as compelling. Read it to be inspired--to achieve your seemingly impossible dreams.

Raw But Great Read
This book was raw, felt way too familiar … a little triggering at times as a former foster care kid … but overall a good read. I am always amazed to see what some people are willing to achieve in spite of. Orvin achieved a lot in spite of … Some people come to realize that if God didn’t give it to you, it’s because you didn’t need it to fulfill the purpose he created you for! Thanks Orvin for having the courage to share your story

Brutally Honest and Thought Provoking
Twice Over a Man by Orvin Kimbrough is a book not just about a man. It’s also about Ameican life: struggles and triumphs through times we all wish didn’t exist but have ro face, with determination and conviction. I particularly like the audio version. I know Orv as a friend for many years. His narration is exactly the way how he speaks in real life. Authentication unmatched in content and presentation!

Compelling story told so honestly
While many parts of the book are gut wrenching and at times very hard to get through it is also so inspiring. To know that someone was able to survive such a traumatic childhood and not only survive but thrive and find passion in helping others grow and give our best everyday is beyond remarkable.
