About this listen

“For fans who appreciate emotionally wrenching reads such as those by Sarah Jio or Kristin Hannah.” (Library Journal)

“Fans of Jodi Picoult and Kristin Hannah now have a new go-to author.” (Sally Hepworth, best-selling author of The Secrets of Midwives)

From the best-selling author of The Things We Cannot Say, Before I Let You Go, and the upcoming The Warsaw Orphan, comes a poignant post-WWII novel that explores the expectations society places on women set within an engrossing family mystery that may unravel everything once believed to be true.

With her father recently moved to a care facility, Beth Walsh volunteers to clear out the family home and is surprised to discover the door to her childhood playroom padlocked. She’s even more shocked at what’s behind it - a hoarder’s mess of her father’s paintings, mounds of discarded papers and miscellaneous junk in the otherwise fastidiously tidy house.

As she picks through the clutter, she finds a loose journal entry in what appears to be her late mother’s handwriting. Beth and her siblings grew up believing their mother died in a car accident when they were little more than toddlers, but this note suggests something much darker.

Beth soon pieces together a disturbing portrait of a woman suffering from postpartum depression and a husband who bears little resemblance to the loving father Beth and her siblings know. With a newborn of her own and struggling with motherhood, Beth finds there may be more tying her and her mother together than she ever suspected.

Don't miss Kelly Rimmer's upcoming and unforgettable novel, The Warsaw Orphan.

Started slow but a great story

I couldn’t stop listening to this once things picked up.

The issues of motherhood, stigmas over mental health, birth control access, sexism were as much alive in the 1950s as they were in the 1990s when the story opens up. Not as overt, but still present.

Amazing story!

This book hit home! I suffered from post partum depression and the way they describe it in this book is to the tee. The story itself was beautifully heart wrenching, but I absolutely loved it. I would definitely recommend you read it

Perfect Narration and Interesting Story Line

I thoroughly enjoyed this audio because the narration was absolutely excellent and the novel was very good. I would have rated the novel in itself a five star but I found the first half of the book rather predictable. I am thrilled I held on and finished it because it became very heartfelt and interesting. Plus, it had some surprising twists and each character clearly came across as realistic. very importantly, Rimmer did an excellent job making the listener feel the deep emotions plus the rewards and disappointments that life has to offer.

Having a child of my own recently made me relate and really enjoy this book. There’s so many emotions during the first year, this really pulled on my heartstrings!

Excellent read, especially for new mothers

I loved this book for many reason, but especially because the author correctly captured what it’s like to suffer from post pardon depression, and I hope any new mother experiencing it, will better be able to identify it. I suffered from but, but like the main character, Grace, didn’t identify it, because I wasn’t sad. I was restless, agitated, dark, and always on high alert for some unforeseen danger. The authors perfect description brought me much peace about what I went through when I had my children.
The story also culminates in a very satisfying and realistic ending, with a good understanding of what it was like for women when they were expected to just get married and produce children. It’s amazing how having control over our desire to produce offspring has liberated women.

Just ok

It took awhile into this book to make it somewhat worth listening to. The plot just wasn’t very good.
The voiceover was excellent however.
Not worth my 1 credit though.

Great story, terrible narration

The narration for this book was terrible. In some sections, the very obvious cutting and splicing of different takes was extremely distracting. I did enjoy the story, though, and it was the only reason I managed to finish.

editing seems off

the editing or voice over on MaryAnns part didn't sound well and, therefore; was distracting.

Timely Story

Captivating. Thought provoking. What a difference a generation made in women’s reproductive rights. My mother suffered, I was able to make choices. Now my daughters rights are being chipped away.
