 Many people do not believe that God is in control of their lives. They think they are the captains of their ship and don’t need God. Others believe that God might exist but that he’s not actively involved in their personal affairs or the world's affairs. It’s a subtle form of deism—the belief that God wound up the clock and let it tick down. According to this view, God started the process when he created the world but allows things to happen naturally without any guidance or influence.

On the other hand, Scripture tells us that God, the Creator, is actively involved in all his Creation. Paul said, “For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on the earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him” (Colossians 1:16). Trusting in God’s providence or sovereignty gives us victory in the Christian life.

During periods when my life seemed random and out of control, I learned to lean hard on God’s sovereignty. I remember the weeks visiting my wife in the hospital when I felt confused and frustrated. My only refuge was God and the knowledge that he was in control of all things.
