About this listen

Once again Liane Moriarty uses her unique, razor-sharp observational skills to sift through the emerging fault lines of seemingly happy families.

If only they'd said no....

What if they hadn't gone? That's the question Clementine can't stop asking herself.

It was just a backyard barbeque. They didn't know their hosts that well. They were friends of friends. They could so easily have said no. But she and her husband, Sam, said yes, and now they can never change what they did and didn't do that beautiful winter's day. Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One yapping dog. It's a normal weekend in the suburbs. What could possibly go wrong?

This is exactly what you can always expect from her: complex characters and their development, the lives of regular people, suburban drama and a “twist” of sorts to tie it all up.

However, I think the experience may have been more enjoyable in written format (lesson learned, although the narration/performance was very good). Coupled with that, I found the story a bit too long for what it was, with a lot of filler content. After waiting to read this for so long, it just didn’t land the way I’d hoped or expected. I’m still a fan, but I reckon a paperback will be better medium for me next time.

Almost what I expected

Once I got used to the accent, I relaxed into the subtle voices the narrator applied. The story is nuanced & layered & very clever. The characters relatable yet challenging, which made me look for the challenges I may present to my loved ones. A laugh, a tear, a nod, a grimace - expect to experience them.

Incredible attention to intention & consequences

I found the book hard to get into, but then kept on wanting to know more. Amazing how one event can trigger so much..
By the end of the book, I was into it and enjoyed it.

I loved the characters and the relationships between them but I felt like the author teased you far too much. You were given such tiny pieces of info after long drawn out stories. It felt like drawing blood from a stone. I enjoyed the book way more after I knew what had happened on the day. (which was about 10 hours in)

I did not have enough patience for this book

Same painstaking trickling out of information to the reader. Liane Moriarty makes a meal of scraps. It is thrilling the first time one reads her works, tiresome the second, and exhausting the third.

Caroline Lee reads well, but often reads negative emotion into what could be neutral statements.

No Different to Other Liane Moriarty Work

While I've enjoyed several Liane Moriarty stories, this one just took way too long to come together. The last 1/3 of the book was very good, but it was hard for me to keep going to get there. Caroline Lee, the narrator, was absolutely superb which made the trudge through the first part of the story worth it.

Not my favorite

Liane Moriarty is currently my favorite author. This story was fun and believable and compelling. I enjoy reading her books but love listening to Caroline Lee read them even more. There are always a few twists that I never expect and Truly Madly Guilty delivered.

Truly a great listen.
