Story
It’s Halloween night, 1984, in Coventry, Massachusetts, and two families are unraveling. Up and down the street, horrifying secrets are being revealed, and all the while, mixed in with the trick-or-treaters of all ages, four children who do not belong are walking door to door, merging with the kids of Parmenter Road. Children in vintage costumes with faded, eerie makeup. They seem terrified, and beg the neighborhood kids to hide them away, to keep them safe from The Cunning Man.

Story
Working at the mall is supposed to be fun. Trish’s job at Muffin-Mania is hardly intellectually challenging and her boss is a piece of work, but it’s worth it to have a job in the same building as her two best friends, the Hanson twins. And the hot guys who hang out there are an added bonus. But something isn’t right about this mall. It’s the oldest mall in the state, remodeled over a dozen times without rhyme or reason, and there are many strange nooks and secret passages behind the bright gleaming storefronts. Someone has been stealing housewares, furniture, and food, and now a mysterious man with ash-gray hair and a whisper-soft voice has started harassing Trish on the phone.

Story
When Miranda Barnes first sees the sleepy town of St. Yvette, Louisiana, with its moss-draped trees, above-ground cemeteries, and her grandfather’s creepy historic home, she realizes that life as she knew it is officially over. Almost immediately, there seems to be something cloying at her. Something lonely and sad and...very pressing. Even at school and in the group project she’s been thrown into, she can’t escape it. Whispers when she’s alone, shadows when no one is there to make them, and a distant pleading voice that wakes her from sleep.

When you first enter The Halloween Store, things seem normal. Fun and frightful decorations, ghastly costumes and masks of the season, and bags of candy galore. Then, as you travel farther into its shadowy depths, things begin to change. The air smells of damp autumn leaves and candle-scorched pumpkin. The shelves of All Hallows’ Eve fare grow darker and more disturbing. Strange and unsettling things of Halloweens past and present lurk amid the cobwebs and dust....

Editorial reviews
With her voice perfectly pitched to capture the teenage angst of protagonist Martha, narrator Liisa Ivary quickly plunges the listener into the complications of Martha's life as she and her father move in to a new house with her stepmother and stepbrother Conor. From the beginning, Martha knows that the house is evil, and she's not surprised to find out that someone has been murdered there. When the practical jokes and creepy phone calls begin, she's sure that these aren’t just Halloween tricks. Listeners will enjoy Ivary's expert contrast between Martha’s internal narrative, delivered with wholesome charm, and the encroaching evil that threatens her.

Hokey Blast From The Past
Read this book as a young person in the 90s, loved hearing it again as an Audible. It was definitely fun and brought up some spooky Halloween feelings. A lot of it has not aged well at all, from the completely inappropriate and creepy guidance counselor hanging out with the students to the author’s weird insinuation that the stepbrother isn’t a real relative and thus the obvious flirtation is okay. As others have pointed out, the main character is totally useless and helpless and doesn’t do anything but run around having to be rescued while screaming “Caww..nnnerr!!!???” endlessly. At some points it’s almost comical how often the poor narrator has to stretch out that word and try to perform. The narration itself is OK although again, this is the equivalent of a modern penny dreadful. I’m not trying to make it sound like it’s not fun, because it is, just that it’s easy listening for a spooky fall day. The ending is surprisingly gruesome, though, and more or less redeems the empty jump scares that come before.
