La historia transcurre en un hotel de provincias, la noche en la que se hospeda en él Dionisio, su protagonista, a la espera de su boda, que se celebrará al día siguiente. En el intervalo de esas horas conoce a Paula, joven bailarina de una compañía que pasa por la ciudad. Paula y la compañía le descubren un mundo desconocido. Por ello, Dionisio reconsidera su intención de casarse para marcharse con Paula.
Escrita en 1932 aunque estrenada veinte años después, en 1952. Mihura fue un dramaturgo, periodista y autor de guiones cinematográficos, considerado el más importante creador del teatro del absurdo, y principal humorista en lengua castellana del siglo XX.
