Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

It was summer in the mountains when five small children vanished from their nursery school picnic. The heat was stifling that day, the tinkle of an ice-cream van in the air.... Three-and-a-half years later, in the dead of winter, the children are returned to their families...one by one. All except for Ivy - the granddaughter of Homicide Detective Kate Wakeland. Story
When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

Story
It’s hard meeting your ex after so much time apart. You remember the tears and accusations, the desperate look on his face as he punched the wall, but you try not to show it. You smile politely, even while your heart beats faster. You watch as he looks down into the stroller, at the beautiful blond-haired, blue-eyed baby kicking his little legs in the sunshine, whose innocent smile lights up your world. You see his face change. You know what he’s thinking. The next day he calls. His voice is shaking. He wants the truth. Is it his child?

Excellent narration
It's really sad that people have to be mean, even cruel towards authors and narrators. The narration by the way , is excellent. I heard no "whining " and I'm a pretty good judge of narration as I've been an audible customer for over 10 years.
As for the writing, the premise is fresh, writing is very good, lots of twists and creepiness that you would expect in a book like this. It's s good book and I see nothing wrong. Highly recommended.

Not sure
I just cant seem to love this book. What should have taken at max 2 or 3 days just drug and drug so a book could be completed. The story line was a tad confusing and I developed no sympathy for the main character. Narrator was great!

Missed the mark.
Decent narration, really annoying main character with tedious internal dialogue. That being said, just as a bad narrator can make or break an otherwise good book, a bad book can sometimes make or break the experience despite intriguing narration. The stubborn main character just complained about her situations while insisting on making one wrong decision after another pursuit of a solution.
*Semi-spoiler ahead*
1) In debt, yet refuses help and a job from a loving dad.
2) Would rather sit in isolation in a basement office putting herself through psychological torture than accept help from said loving dad.
3) Consistently drags out telling the truth about her life whenever opportunities for help arise.
4) "Poor me" gets annoying after clear, logical solutions are presented but she shirks them for the ridiculous and illogical route. No sympathy.
The first Dreda Say Mitchell novel I listened to was Spare Room, which I loved. I was excited for more when I hit play. However, I found this one lacking. Lots of annoying buildup without satisfying conclusions, and overall seemed like a hodgepodge of plot lines that didn't mesh all that well.
