THE MILLION-COPY BESTSELLING PHENOMENON
This is the story of Sam and Sadie. It's not a romance, but it is about love.
When Sam catches sight of Sadie at a crowded train station one morning he is catapulted straight back to childhood, and the hours they spent immersed in playing games.
Their spark is instantly reignited and sets off a creative collaboration that will make them superstars. It is the 90s, and anything is possible.
What comes next is a decades-long tale of friendship and rivalry, fame and art, betrayal and tragedy, perfect worlds and imperfect ones. And, above all, our need to connect: to be loved and to love.

Very interesting read
This was a different kind of story for me, and I really enjoyed it. The time span it covers allows you to be part of the characters stories through different phases of their lives. The characters are real and flawed (more than I am normally used to - but its written really well). I also enjoyed the performances, well suited to the characters and the story.

Flat
The story was ok - it flowed along and told the story. But there was no adventure or excitement.
The characters for all the detail still came across as flat.
Sadie was selfish and lacked self awareness which whilst common the your early 20s was frustrating. I’m sure others found Sam frustrating. I liked Marx the most of the three main characters.
Overall if you don’t want to spend time on this book but want to cause it is popular don’t. It’s an okay book but nothing to write home about.

Couldn’t put it down
This is such a great listen. The storyline is so refreshing and new for non-gamers. The universal themes of connection and creativity including your life’s work are beautiful and exciting. I’m recommending this to everyone particularly friends and family who keep coming back to the passion work they can’t put down through the good and bad times. Beautiful. Thank you Gabrielle.

Thought provoking story of a generation
What a great read. Loved everything about this book, from the way the author describes the characters, builds them over generations and carries themes throughout to the touching on of many topical experiences of a generation in a non-confrontational way. One of my top reads for sure!

Exquisite character development
What a fantastic book and so beautifully and sensitively read. Highly recommend. You don't need to be a gamer to love this one. The story, the characters and the worlds they create are enough to keep any reader engaged.

Loved this book - I’m 72 and found it so authentic!
Generations exploring different generations. If there was ever a generation ‘gap’, this book celebrates and straddles them all! Relevant and honest, depth of characters, and the fun of creating games all rolled into one. A great book club read - for open minds!

Left a bit unsatisfied
Couldn’t stop listening to this book, but at the same time I felt very frustrated by all of the main characters throughout the entire book. Kept waiting for a positive shift in character by Sam and Sadie, but was let down all the way through.
