About this listen
Evie and Elliot are scrawny, filthy and wide-eyed with fear when they turn up on foster carer Maggie Hartley's doorstep. Aged just two and three years old, this brother and sister have hardly set foot outside their own home. They have been prisoners, locked in a terrifying world of abuse, violence and neglect.
Maggie soon realises that Evie and Elliot are lacking the basic life skills we all take for granted. The outside world terrifies them; the sound of the doorbell sends them into a panic that takes hours to abate. Gradually unlocking the truth of their heartbreaking upbringing, Maggie tells their shocking true story.
From emotionally scarred and damaged little children, we see how - with warmth and dedication - Maggie transforms their lives. As this moving story unfolds, we share Maggie's joy when these children finally smile again - when they realise they do have a future after all.

Amazing story!
Well written and well read. This book keeps you listening to it and tells a magical story of hope. What happened to the children wad terrible, but they had love and patience and compassion shown and their story is one of joy. Great read!

Truly Captivating!
As someone once interested in adopting and still very much interested in the well being of children, I found this a very informative read. The children's personalities and struggles were so very real and heartwrenching. As a mother of my own I can relate to the feelings and decisions of Maggie the Foster Mom. This is a must read for anyone looking to adopt or become a foster parent.

Reader Comments
This book is recommended to survivors of child neglect growing up. Reading the story of these two siblings helped me to over come being neglected by my own parents growing up.

I'm Hooked!
Honestly between the writing and the narrator, I feel like I am sitting at the kitchen table having a coffee with a friend. Every story grips me from beginning to end, which always comes too soon. I have listened to all of her books, most of which in one day. Cannot get enough!

Be prepared to feel every emotion
Written with so much detail, Maggie Hartley’s books suck you into her world, making you love these children as much as she does. Be prepared to rejoice in their victories, and weep for their losses, to feel happy, sad, fear and frustration. Every child should have the opportunity to feel the love and safety that Maggie gives “her” kids.
