About this listen

A YA thriller described as The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time meets John le Carre, about a teen math prodigy with an extreme anxiety disorder who finds himself caught in a web of lies and conspiracies after an assassination attempt on his mother.

Seventeen-year-old Peter Blankman is a math genius. He also suffers from devastating panic attacks. Pete gets through each day with the help of his mother - a famous scientist - and his beloved twin sister, Bel.

But when his mom is nearly assassinated in front of his eyes and Bel disappears, Pete finds himself on the run. Dragged into a world where state and family secrets intertwine, Pete must use his extraordinary analytical skills to find his missing sister and track down the people who attacked his mother. But his greatest battle will be with the enemy he's fought his entire life: the constant terror that threatens to overwhelm him.

Weaving back and forth between Pete's past and present, the novel is a testimony from a protagonist who is brilliant, broken, and trying to be brave.

At first I thought the information was being introduced in a strange or nonsensical order, but it ended up working well with the theme and plot of the story. The panicked writing and jumping around truly feels like the inside of someone's anxious head. Not sure all the twists fully line up and one of the villains gets forgotten about, but the plot is otherwise solid and very engaging. The writing alone makes it more than worth your time.

Disorganization works with the story

This story could’ve been really interesting but my goodness there is far too much and far too many characters switching names and the timeline was really confusing too. The MC is like a math prodigy, so it’s also full of long lengths of him counting or talking and thinking about solving mathematical proofs. He has some severe mental health challenges and that takes up a good portion of the story but just serves as a distraction, along with all the proof this, impossible math here, the MC losing his literal mind over a proof no one could solve. There is just so much going on that the story you’re trying to tell is almost completely lost to the vast amount of minutia. It probably comes across better if you’re reading it yourself rather than listen, but I’m not interested enough to go find out. That MC was so whiny, and he’s 16! As I was listening I had pegged his age to single digits lol. So overall, no I did not like the audiobook version of this. One of my rare Did Not Finish collection now.

Started off well but I had to quit halfway through
