About this listen
The pulse-pounding conclusion to the Hater trilogy.
The war that has torn the human race apart is finally nearing its end. With most towns and cities now uninhabitable, and with the country in the grip of a savage nuclear winter, both Hater and Unchanged struggle to survive.
Hundreds of Hater fighters have settled on the East Coast in the abandoned remains of a relatively undamaged town under the command of Hinchcliffe—who’ll stop at nothing to eradicate the last few Unchanged and consolidate his position at the top of this new world order. This fledgling society is harsh and unforgiving—your place in the ranks is decided by how long and how hard you’re prepared to fight.
Danny McCoyne is the exception to the rule. His ability to hold the Hate and to use it to hunt out the remaining Unchanged has given him a unique position in Hinchcliffe’s army of fighters. As the enemy’s numbers reduce, so the pressure on McCoyne increases, until he finds himself at the very center of a pivotal confrontation, the outcome of which will have repercussions on the future of everyone who is left alive.

Story
It’s taken Matthew Dunne almost three months to get home. Never more than a few meters from the Haters at any time, every single step has been fraught with danger. But he’s made it. During his time in the wilderness, Matt developed a skill that is in high demand: the ability to anticipate and predict Hater behavior. It’s these skills that will thrust him into a web of subterfuge and danger. As the pressure mounts inside the camp, he finds himself under scrutiny from all sides. He’s always done his best to avoid trouble, but sometimes it can’t be helped.

Fourteen people are trapped on Skek, a barren island in the middle of the North Sea somewhere between the coasts of the UK and Denmark. Over the years this place has served many purposes - a fishing settlement, a military outpost, a scientific base - but one by one its inhabitants have abandoned its inhospitable shores. Today it's home to Hazleton Adventure Experiences, an extreme sports company specializing in corporate team building events. Life there is fragile and tough. One slip is all it takes.

In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

It was meant to change the world. To cure the incurable and rebuild the broken. In the right hands, the organism known as Chimera had the potential to alter the course of human civilization for the better. Instead it was abused, rushed. The resulting outbreak caused the dead to rise and shattered everything man had built.

Unfortunately very repetitious
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The last hour had me so angry I wanted to turn it off. Not only did a few conversations end up downright ridiculous considering the characters' circumstances, but tension forced through character stupidity is about as grating as it gets when being displeased with a story.
What could David Moody have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Strip out unnecessary dialogue. Too many conversations were repeated again and again with a whole lot of 'I don't understand?!' and 'What's going on?!' dragging out obvious points.
Have you listened to any of Gerard Doyle’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No
Do you think Them or Us needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. Because of the ending and I also felt like this story could have been half as long since many conversations were repeated and needlessly drawn out.
Any additional comments?
I like the core story, this just had a lot of fluff and some of the characters acting illogically, which hurts MY head.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Sad what the Haters created, and sad what Danny became. Weak and sick and wondering what the heck took place Danny finds himself in a unique position, but will he do what is right? or what he feels is best...?

This is quality literature
Moody has done something in this series that really doesn’t exist in the standard fare of the genre.
He uses a thoroughly engrossing apocalyptic tale to explore broader themes about the human condition. Where you read so many reviews of apocalyptic books that are deservedly labeled as being full of sexist gender roles, racist stereotypes, etc., David’s work lies in the other end of the spectrum.
The Hater series treats several of the key conflicts prevalent in the world we live in with nuance that will make you think.
Not inly that, but the 3 books combined are a worthy epic that I find utterly engaging.
Ive listened through 3x, and try to imagine how Hollywood could possibly do justice to such a sweeping and significant story.
I hope it DOES get made by a brilliant writer-director.
The narrator does an excellent job here too.
I just LOVE this series.

Hater series
Hater, Dog blood and Them or us
I found it a entertaining series, generally I dislike British accents but this narrator didn't bug me.
The story goes maybe a third or more of the population succumb to some change that makes them incredibly violent and kill anyone who hasn't changed.

After the second book it was hard to bring as much excitement in a dying world. Yet Moody did a great job of bringing everything to a complete circle and allowing the reader for a glimmer of hope.

Disappointing
Not nearly as good as the first two books in the trilogy. I felt like it was an anti-climatic ending and disappointed for having sat through the book and nothing awesome ever really happened. There was also a lot of really repetitive dialog. Really every conversation in the book could be boiled down to Danny whining that he just wants to go off in to a corner and die, and someone else saying they want him to go do something for them. Seriously, this book was set in a post apocalyptic world so I knew it would be depressing, but damn talk about annoying and abysmal. Very disappointed.
