About this listen
From the author of The Physician and Shaman comes this story of a young man - the grapes he grows, the wine he fashions, the women he loves, and his struggle against an evil that seeks to destroy him. Already an international best seller.
Josep Alvarez is a young man in the tiny grape-growing village of Santa Eulália, in Northern Spain, where his father grows black grapes that are turned into cheap vinegar. Joseph loves the agricultural life, but he is the second son, and his father's vineyard will be inherited by his brother Donat, the firstborn. Josep needs to keep his hands in the soil. He yearns for a job growing grapes and for an opportunity to marry Teresa Gallego.
In Madrid, an assassination plot conceived against the political leader of Spain by men of wealth and power creates a storm of intrigue that sucks into its vortex a group of innocent young farm workers in Santa Eulália. How Josep's life is changed drastically by these events and how, ironically, they gradually turn him into an inspired vintner with an evolving vision of life is the fascinating story of The Winemaker.

I wish this was a movie or mini series
Noah Gordon makes you taste and smell in his wonderful, descriptive words of the worlds he is weaving. This is my second series of his that I have listened too. It is a JOY to fill my days in his worlds! ALSO a must read/listen to is his series beginning with the Physician!
I also LOVE Jamie Renell’s voice and inflections he MAKES books a pleasure to listen too.

A novel with a wine maker's patience.
A good tale, which takes its time to build a strong foundation. Be patient as the story develops like a fine wine, and you will be rewarded.

Inspiring, true to life
Wonderful! A down-to-Earth tale about a steady fellow who gains through hard work and fellowship. Though I loved the atmosphere and attention to detail, stubborn protagonist Josep Alvarez develops so gradually I started to wonder if he was really maturing at all. But the novel ties up in a beautiful way that brought tears to my eyes and reveals the fruits of all that has come before. Narrator Jamie Renell is superb as well.

The Making Of A Man And Vintner
Narration is smooth and easy.
This is the story of a man of the soil, a Spaniard during the time of Queen Isabella, when political fervor caused kingdoms to rise and fall. Josep Alvarez is the second son of a man who grows grapes to make vinegar. His future looks to be soldiering or the priesthood, because only the eldest son could inherit then. So Josep trains to be a soldier. Betrayed, he goes to France, where he learns to use grapes for wine. When his father dies, Josep returns home, buys the vineyard from his brother and creates a wine of his own. Josep works hard, eventually becoming a family man and deals with the betrayals in his life. There is forgiveness, reconciliation and the forging of a boy into a man and vintner, told in a wonderful way.

No much of a plot
NWell likable main character but the story lacks of an interesting plot. “Guy comes back to his hometown to fulfill his dream of making wine against no odds. Everything works for him right away”. The narrator did not do any research to pronounce the Spanish names which is kind of annoying. Having said that, I did enjoyed the book and keep me entertained, I just wasn’t thrilled at any point.
