Shri Gusway's world is upended when Marv Rinal reveals the secret of his heritage. Rinal professes his love for Gusway and asks her to become his partner. If she accepts, she must live on his homeworld of Baen, leaving Vanguard and the life she always wanted. Gusway chafes in Rinal's world of privilege and protocol but is driven by her love.
