About this listen
Discover a fresh perspective on the art of leading in Dr. Kevin Leman's story about a young reporter who lands the meeting of a lifetime and walks away with the keys to exceptional leadership. The Way of the Shepherd points you beyond dated trends and out-of-touch management techniques to the strategies that will make you a truly outstanding leader.
When William Pentak had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interview Ted McBride, one of the most respected CEOs in America, he was shocked by what McBride was willing to share. McBride taught him the seven secrets he inherited long ago from his mentor - an eccentric but brilliant professor who passed on these time-tested management principles that, while ancient in their origin, are still applicable in today's fast-paced, high-tech world.
Throughout The Way of the Shepherd, you'll learn how to infuse your work with meaning, no matter your role, title, industry, or the size of your team. Uncover the tried-and-true best practices for how to engage, energize, and ignite your workforce by:
- Getting to know your team, one person at a time
- Relentlessly communicating your values and your mission
- Defining the cause for your people and showing them where they fit in
- Having a heart for the people that you're leading
- Understanding that great leadership isn't just professional, it's personal
If you're ready to transform your team, create a culture of belonging, and truly learn to lead by example, it's time to discover The Way of the Shepherd.

Story
What can blue-collar business teach us about work and faith? The faith and work conversation is alive and well, but most resources focus on white-collar jobs, neglecting the majority of the workforce. When Pastor Dave Hataj realized he needed to go home and take over the family gear shop, he didn’t expect it to become a spiritually transformative season of his life. Yet as he began to think about what it meant to be a Christian in business, he discovered just how much our work matters to God and how blue-collar business can change people, communities, and even the world.

True leadership isn't a matter of having a certain job or title. In fact, being chosen for a position is only the first of the five levels every effective leader achieves. To become more than "the boss" people follow only because they are required to, you have to master the ability to invest in people and inspire them. To grow further in your role, you must achieve results and build a team that produces. You need to help people to develop their skills to become leaders in their own right.

Story
True leadership isn't a matter of having a certain job or title. In fact, being chosen for a position is only the first of the five levels every effective leader achieves. To become more than "the boss" people follow only because they are required to, you have to master the ability to invest in people and inspire them. To grow further in your role, you must achieve results and build a team that produces. You need to help people to develop their skills to become leaders in their own right.

It's about the stuff you learn when you've worked for a boss you'd swear jumped out of a Dilbert cartoon; worked in a business whose performance careened up and down like a runaway clown car; faced legal or ethical problems that needed the wisdom of Solomon to sort out while they roiled your guts at night; and sat on the stand across from some third-rate Perry Mason or tried to be one yourself.

We desire God’s peace yet cling to the illusion that we’re in control. We hunger for righteousness but continue to indulge the cravings of our flesh. We long for love while refusing to be open and vulnerable. We can be our own worst enemy. So, how do we relinquish control and surrender to God? The Way of the Shepherd explores the sources of our internal war and the Biblical solutions that bring genuine peace....

Good ideas that just make sense
Where does The Way of the Shepherd rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This book is a book about management but written in the format of a novel. I loved the ideas but the novel aspect was a little cheesy. No regrets reading the book as the info was excellent.

Leadership at its best
This book reads a lot like a Pat Lencioni book. The biblical principles of leadership in this book are so practical, and yet so profound. Anyone who’s ever worked in a secular for profit business, nonprofit business, or church staff environment can absolutely relate with every page of this book. It’s simple, study. These principles apply them from a place of care for your people you’ll be an incredible leader.

Leaders, This one is for you!
The Way of the Shepherd is a powerful and practical guide to leadership, blending timeless wisdom with real-world application. Using the metaphor of a shepherd, Kevin Leman and William Pentak outline seven principles that emphasize trust, compassion, and accountability. This book isn’t just theory—it’s a roadmap for leaders who want to inspire, protect, and develop their teams. Whether you’re leading a business, a ministry, or a family, this book will challenge you to lead with heart and purpose. The Audible narration makes it even more engaging, bringing the lessons to life in a way that sticks. Highly recommended!
