About this listen

The monster in his nightmares calls him friend, but Anthony Luther wants nothing to do with the Man-in-the-Dark, wishing only to disappear into the small town of Heckhaven, TN. Unfortunately for him, that town has a long memory and it remembers he caused a fire that killed one of their own. Ten years later Anthony learns that sharing a drink with someone in the abyss of the afterlife is more than it seems.

His best friend, Dezeray Lilet is able to overlook his past transgressions making life in the small town bearable, until another fire threatens to unravel his happiness. Already marked by the first fire Anthony doesn't think he'll be able to overcome a second. To make matters worse Dezeray has hidden her past from herself as a coping mechanism, but when Anthony’s past resurfaces her own skeletons are pulled from the cobwebs of her mind unleashing her personal demons into the pot of chaos brewing.

All comes to a head when a demon crashes a graduation party and tips the pot flooding the town of Heckhaven with violence. Only then is a reluctant group of angels called Sciathan Zaldune dispatched to watch over Anthony, at least until the secrets of his past and his connection to the Man-in-the-Dark can be explained. Caught in an ancient struggle between good and evil Anthony finds himself forced to side against humanity to save himself and his few friends.

So I have to say... Getting a chance to read this a second time but in audiobook form allowed me to truly soak in so much more of the story. The more beyond Zarulean and following the council of angels was a lot of fun. I enjoyed all the twists and mentions of a certain character whos a pyscho and has a thing for Dez. Note to the author- Do not harm Dez or you will have a salty fan! On Anthony Luther's side of the tale you get a very deep psychological dive into his mind and the haunting reality that he's a pawn in a war between good and evil. I found the author's deep lore building from the beginning of the story to be engaging, well thought out, and fascinating. Gabriel... Ah what to say? He's just a fun character. Originally when I'd read the story I thought he was a jerk. Come to find out he's actually one of my favorite characters! I'm definitely looking forward to following his story come book two. Detective Printer is another one of those characters I find intriguing and I'm looking forward to knowing more about as the series progressives. Heckhaven reminds me of one of those small towns that you might find in the vampire diaries like Mystic Falls or something out of the TV show supernatural or you need to call Sam and Dean Winchester to come take care of business. If either of those references made sense to you I highly recommend that you read this book! there's also clear evidence that the author enjoys well thought out and lengthy fantasy novels written by Brandon Sanderson and Robert Jordan. his attention to detail with not just the characters, but diving into their psyches, and their personalities makes the book that much better. so if you're a fan of supernatural, epic fantasy, good characters, and deep and attention to detail lore... then you need to pick up this book. I'm thrilled I got the opportunity to finally listen to this audiobook. Hats off to you Mr Muller for this epic 10-star read! I can't wait to see what happens next!

The narration was solid with good voices and a decent pace The only criticism I have is that I thought the narrator spoke too quickly at times. otherwise, as a fellow narrator myself, I thought the performance was fantastic. I'm looking forward to seeing how he progresses in his new career!

Fun and Innovative Supernatural Epic!

Eric Osmond brought life to this world in ways I didn't know possible. His range and accents made it easy to suspend belief and immerse myself in the story. The characters were distinguished and given personalities only hinted at on the page. I would recommend this audio book to anyone and can't wait to hear what else he performs.
