About this listen
Rapping on the walls. Mysterious rains of stones. Furniture moving around by itself. Phantom voices. Unexplained fires. Invisible assaults. The symptoms of poltergeist activity are well known, but what is a poltergeist, really? Is it some type of demon, or an angry spirit whose only mission is to cause mischief and destruction? Is it the unconscious energy of a troubled living person, somehow affecting the environment from a distance? Or could it all be simply fraud or misidentification? In this comprehensive book, well over 100 cases of poltergeist activity, from the first century to the present day, are summarized and examined. All the best-known cases are presented, from Borley Rectory to the Bell Witch, from the Great Amherst Mystery to Gef the Talking Mongoose, from Rosenheim to Tina Resch, from Enfield to the Entity. A large selection of fascinating and lesser-known accounts from all over the world are also included, and all contain testimony of the most eerie and extraordinary events. In addition, the book contains in-depth discussions of distinct patterns, stages, and theorized causes of poltergeist phenomena, drawing from some of the best research in parapsychology, neuroscience, and quantum mechanics, as well as a skeptical perspective to provide a grounded overview. The Unseen Hand is the ultimate one-stop-shop for listeners interested in poltergeist disturbances throughout history and the theories behind what causes them.

They're spoken of in stories and superstitions, relics of an unenlightened age, old wives' tales, passed down through generations. When this work was first published in 1970, it shredded the then-trendy nuts-and-bolts extraterrestrial hypothesis for UFOs in favor of one that linked UFOs to a variety of paranormal and supernatural phenomena that have taken place throughout history. Keel was one of the first to note that the UFO phenomenon appears in different disguises - and that one could not begin to decipher this great mystery without first taking into account its many and varied deliberate deceptions.

For more than a century, some of the world’s most important thinkers and leaders—men like Arthur Conan Doyle and William Butler Yeats—gathered once a month and discussed the supernatural at The Ghost Club in London. In the early 1900s the club's chairman was Harry Price, the world’s most well-known ghost hunter. He and other members, like Harry Houdini, sought to debunk the charlatans who preyed on vulnerable people with fake seances, tarot readings, and spiritual encounters.

Forty years ago a small cadre of dedicated researchers began actively investigating cases, interviewing witnesses, and exchanging data through a small, informal network of international contacts. Today this low-profile network, or "invisible college", has grown into a larger, multination volunteer research effort joined by many individuals. But the questions first raised 40 years ago remain current - and unanswered.

Intriguing!
Well written, with lots of information for each case. The book is divided in to sections by what type of manifestation occured. The author's voice makes for a relaxing listen. If you love the 13 O'Clock Podcast, you will love this book. I had it on my wish list since I heard it was coming out. I would totally recommend this one!

Great Book
Overall a great book! I found the author on her podcast and she brings the same mentality to her book. They're two things keeping this from giving the review a five star. First, the third chapter seemed a little pointless to me. It goes over briefly dates and situations when poltergeist activity was reported. I felt this chapter could have been summed up in one sentence. "The earliest case of poltergeist activity was this date". The second reason is the audio recording wasn't great. The room is was recorded in gave a slight echo and it was distracting at times. I would recommend upgrading the audio equipment or sound proofing the room you record in. You could tell this is the same room she does the podcasts in. Keep up the good work Jenny!

Historical/Scientific Look At Poltergeist Activity
Where does The Unseen Hand rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
First time I've used Audible.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
Enjoyed the format of the book. This is a historical progression of poltergeist cases broken up into different categories of activity from least to worst.
Have you listened to any of Jenny Ashford’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I listen to Jenny and Tom's "13 O'Clock Podcast" and watch some of their videos on YouTube. Jenny has spent a lot of time researching information on these books which is impressive. The show gives a more general overview of paranormal and true crime cases.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The historical progression and increase in activity from each chapter to the next keeps your interest the whole time. The audible version is almost 12 hours which I binge listened to over a week.
Any additional comments?
Jenny and Tom are very practical and no b.s. in their approach to the paranormal and true crime cases...also very funny. I would recommend the podcast for audible listeners since it's just as good as this book. Still no sign of that raccoon in the book though...there was a talking mongoose.
