About this listen
From New York Times best-selling author Thea Harrison comes the first in an explosive new quartet of stories set in the Elder Races world…. Dragos and Pia are back by popular vote!
This story ends in a cliffhanger.
Saying goodbye to their old life in the Wyr demesne in New York may be hard, but Dragos and Pia are determined to create a new life in the Other land of Rhyacia.
At first, everything seems idyllic. Rhyacia is paradisiacal. Accompanied by old friends and new allies, the future looks safe and bright for Dragos, Pia, and baby Niall.
But strange things are happening beneath the picturesque façade. Items move unaccompanied, buildings collapse without justifiable cause, and even the most powerful residents of Rhyacia can provide no logical explanation for the events transpiring. Whispered rumors point to something called the unseen.
As Dragos and Pia investigate, they uncover a greater mystery than they could have imagined, and they realize the startling truth....
They’re not alone in Rhyacia. The land Dragos had thought was uninhabited hides many secrets, a shocking history that’s not quite ready to be buried, and something more.
Something ancient, evil, and hungry. Something that wants to consume Dragos and take everything he holds dear.
Something that just may be powerful enough to overcome the dragon....
This is book one in a series of four connected novellas. The first three books in this set will end in cliffhangers.

"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

great start of story that costs too much
Hooray for more Pia and Dragos, but this is Book 1 of 4 of a new series arc, and this ends in a cliffhanger. I like what I heard of the story in this first part, but I am not happy with the thought of a single whole story costing me 10.46 x 4 for a total of 41.84.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
Has the publisher lost touch with reality? Like a tanking economy where more and more readers are on an ever tightening budget?!?!
Book lost a star for price.
Eastlake does a great job of narration.

OH! MY! GOD!!!!!!
I submit my stars but only about 3 times in the 700 or so books I have listened to have I written anything. The progression of so many characters within a short period of time...nothing rushed but complete detailed. The last 5 minutes were amazing, I do t know when this series has last taken me here (trying to convey this must read without spoiling). I can’t wait for the next installment

Love! Love! Love!
When Thea told us she was stepping away from Dragos & Pia, I think we collectively mourned her decision. They haunted her into revealing more of their story so strongly that the American Witch subset of the Elder Races universe was put on hold midstream. Dragos won’t be ignored, lol.
Yes, there’s a cliffhanger but it plays out like a season finale. It’s wildly different from what we’re accustomed to yet absolutely perfect. Can’t wait for the next round to see what happens!
You know I think Sophie Eastlake is perfect so I won’t go into a long winded speech about her but, yeah...perfect.

questions
The first quarter of this new short story series starts off absolutely great. It hits the ground running and just gets better and better. Then it hits the cliff and i'm screaming "No! don't stop now!!!" i'm glad that Thea is planning to pump the rest out quickly, but even a month waiting time is going to be agony. LOL woe is me.
Now the book is awesome buuuut, while i was listening to it a couple questions came up about Pea for me. 1. What exactly is Pea actually planning to do while living in Ryeasa? Don't get me wrong i know motherhood is a hard full time job at first, but it will only last for a few years before it's little more than making sure Nial didn't kill anyone that day. What is she planning to do with the rest of her long long life? She doesn't seem all that interested in co rulership sense she either ignores or actively avoids anyone who wants to talk to her about the daily problems with running a new country. On the other hand i can't really see Pea being happy as just a Socialite. The obvious job for her is of course healer. buuuut, Dragos would never allow that cause the temptation to use her blood would be a daily struggle. 2. Is Pea learning to use her magic? Honestly before this book all i thought Pea could do was change shape and give blood to people. But in the book she made a witch light, so is she learning to use her magic? What else could she do with it? could she learn to heal that way? Sigh i will probably get my answers if i just (ahem) hold my horses and wait. buuuut it's soooooo hard T_T
Really looking forward to seeing Thea's twist on this ancient story,

The Gang is All Back
I love Novelas by this author. As a library, science major, she has reams of information she can draw on. Plus she has a great imagination. I love an author, who can write a short story, because that truly takes talent to entertain. The author says that this ends in a cliffhanger, but I listen to a tale for entertainment, narrated by the great Sophie, Eastlake, a.k.a. Julia Whelan. Her male voices are wonderful since 2014. I tend to view stories, not with a cliffhanger, but with a preview of the next book. This book has stinkpot, a.k.a. Niall and you’ll have to read the book to know what his wonderful weire form is. I can’t get enough of that character. I think I’ve managed to purchase most, if not all of Miss Harrison’s books on audible, but I just have not had a chance to listen to them all. I seem to favor the short stories as they move so quickly.
Were my comments of help?

Short
This is the first of 4 stories, 3 of them with cliffhangers. The author says we won’t have to wait long for the next story.
Elder Races is a very favorite series of mine. This story was great, like visiting a favorite relative, but it was short and unfinished. It bugs me. It will be $40 for probably 15 or 20 hours of enjoyment. No doubt I will partake cuz I am an addict of Elder Races. But I am not happy about it.

Slow at First
Slow at first and most of the book, but the last couple of chapters rise to the occasion. I was disappointed that the author did the typical thing and 1. made the one for sure darker hued ethnic female a weredog/wolf and then 2. added injury to insult by making her gay as well. Not that being gay is an issue, but it seems that this is a common cast for the token person of color whose character they don't really care to develop. It's insulting to both those of the rainbow coalition and the rainbow movement, since every popular series has to include a gay person to be realistic and to appeal to all genre of folks. But really if all you have to throw is a bone to that segment of folks, save it. The inclusion yet exclusion is demeaning and degrading and detracts from the book. It's unfortunate that the gay person has to be a person of color -- of African or Asian decent usually-- because the author apparently doesn't know anything else to do with those characters. But the fact that it is such a prevalent choice of a role for ethnic women and men by a lot of these sci fi/ adventure/horror/romance writers, that it sends the message to colorful people that the author is insincere and probably just doing as told by a publicist. So they develop a formula for a story, and now part of that formula is to make the colorful folks represent the colorful folks. Ms. Thea, I have loved your books, but I was really disappointed to see you take this road . It's almost as if you are saying people of color and gay people are controversial and don't really fit in, so I'll just throw them together in one character! Disingenuous. Don't waste the time in your next series. Leave that to those stagnating authors who lack imagination.
