About this listen

"Absorbing, stunning, and emotionally rich." (Locus)

The journey through M. R. Carey's "immersive, impeccably rendered world" (Kirkus) - a world in which nature has turned against us - continues in The Trials of Koli, book two of the Rampart Trilogy.

The earth wants to swallow us whole....

Koli never planned to set foot outside his small village. He knew that beyond its walls lay a fearsome landscape filled with choker trees, vicious beasts, and Shunned men. But when he was exiled, he had no choice but to journey out into this strange world where every moment is a fight for survival.

And it's not just Koli's life that is threatened. Whole villages just like his are dying out.

But Koli heard a story, once. A story about lost London, and the mysterious tech of the Old Times that may still be there. If he can find it, there may still be a way for him to change his own fate - by saving the lives of those who are left.

Critic reviews

"A broken world that is both marvelously expansive and claustrophobically menacing. Fans of postapocalyptic science fiction will find plenty to hold their attention." (Publishers Weekly)

"If you loved M.R. Carey's The Book of Koli, you will love The Trials of Koli just as much, if not more... Absorbing, stunning, and emotionally rich." (Locus on The Trials of Koli)

Fascinating world and story. 3 dimensional characters that I came to care about. The kind of book I didn't want to end because I miss the characters when it's over. The narration is perfect.

Love this series!

Fun dystopian listen from a world quite primitive and just discovering old tech left behind. Characters continue to be engaging. Atmospheric descriptions. I look forward to the conclusion. Sometimes I just need a fun listen.

enjoyable follow up.

I have loved this from the beginning and while I enjoy the addition of Spinner's story, the reader speaks much too softly to be easily heard. It takes away from the immersion and the pleasure in a story when there is such a disparity between reader volumes.

New voice too soft.

This is 3 of more. Wondered at the beginning how long I could hang in with this story. I think it is a tad slower than it needs to be but not enough to make me go away. Of course I am going to listen to the next one.

Not all good

The second installment in the Rampart Trilogy. The Trials of Koli continues the story of protagonist Koli Woodsmith as he ventures with a motley crew across a post apocalyptic world.

It's pretty much YA, both SciFi and Fantasy, an adventure with a very diverse cast of main characters. The novel incorporates themes of human resilience and the importance of community. Carey demonstrates the role of unity and redemption in a world where hope is scarce and explores themes of gender and identity.

The pacing and development were good, keeping me interested and engaged. I am looking forward to reading the last installment of the trilogy.

As someone who volunteers with trans kids and who has a trans kid, it was refreshing to see meds portrayed as just a basic human need. The first book had a trans kids as well, but it was just one aspect of human life and I love this so much. Our trans kids are kids, and this story does fairly well in talking about them, and including the abuse they suffer at the hands of those who use religion as a cudgel to “cure them.” (Again, with my volunteer work in a red state, sadly you see this irl too against LGBTQIA2S kids.) I am thankful the author and his publisher had the guts to keep all this in given the tides had started turning against literal children even back in 2019/2020.

The story otherwise is just as interesting as all his other books and he writes in a way that keeps the story moving. We don’t get super sidetracked into b-stories, it’s great! I freaking love the usage of tech vs. non-tech, and the fact that Koli is seeing what home really means and what family really means warms my heart. I kind of wish we had more time with Spinner though, very interesting side story there!! Ack I can’t wait to finish the third book. I’ve gone through one and two in 5 days haha time to get on the third! <3

Such a great book!

Such a good book, I enjoy how book 2 features Spinner’s pov every few chapters. Can predict what’s coming in book 3 but no clue how the story will end.

Love part two of the trilogy
