About this listen

Albert can see the future...

He just doesn't know it yet.

It is said that chess grandmasters can envision a match’s outcome 10 moves before it occurs. Imagine a person who can visualize 10 steps ahead, not simply in the game of chess, but in every human interaction.

Imagine a person who could anticipate what you would say before you said it, who could see a punch before it was thrown.

Imagine a secret that could make all of this possible.

Albert, a Princeton mathematics professor, is such a person, and as he is thrust into a murder and burglary investigation on campus he finds that the secret is buried in an obscure cipher. The discovery leads Albert to team up with an aging mentor, a curious graduate assistant, and an unusual “book club” on a frantic chase across the country to recover the secret and clear his name.

Through this adventure, he rediscovers a woman from his past and is forced to confront his own understanding of love, rationality, power, and the limits of the human mind.

Critic reviews

The Tree of Knowledge is a dynamite read...reminiscent of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code but smarter, sharper...A thrill ride with no seatbelt but what an incredible view.” (Junot Díaz, New York Times best-selling author and winner of the Pulitzer Prize)

The narrator provided a good reading. Her expressiveness brought the flat writing to life. Without their performance this title would have been in the trashcan within minutes. A decent editor could have elevated the story to the level of interesting concept. Instead you get beat over the head with the concept incessantly.

Excellent Narration.

The Book has the secret to unlimited ;power and is the objective of both sides of the good/evil equation. Well-written with relatable characters, this audiobook grabs you early on and doesn't let go until the shocking end. This first book sets up the next, Of Good and Evil, and I can't wait to get it and listen further into the saga.

A Lesson in Logic

The plot is preposterous, the prose is wooden, and the characters are cartoonish. A waste of time and money. I won’t waste either on the subsequent volumes.

A ridiculous book

Maybe if the setting was 100 yrs from now, or that math could train someone in two weeks or that police officers are all bumbling idiots or that convenient drugs caused specific memory loss and so many more implausible things. Possible more plausible in a future filled with inventive tech, more of the cyberpunk genre but not believable set in present day.

Too much suspension of disbelief

Meh story and not a very good narration. Pass this by and get something else v

A really good read and I am looking forward to the next books in the series.

Wow! Echoes of today

I almost never crank the speed of an Audible book but did on this book which was disappointing. This was a great story idea lost in implentatioon that the narrator didn't or could not enhance. Perhaps I am biased by my expectations. Admittedly there were a few segments that were enjoyable but lost in the unbelievable development of physical prowess created by the author.

Great Story Idea Lost

That I bothered to listen to entire book and that Audible REQUIRES a 15 word minimum review WTF. If I want to say I didn’t like the book; that should be acceptable.

Waste of time boiler plate program

I plowed through 1/2 this book but when professor and his student started training as commandos I couldn’t bear the ridiculous story any longer. Basic premise of a mathematician involved in a murder mystery was initially appealing but I should have known in the first scene the assassin presented that book was going from bad to worse.

Implausible to the max
