About this listen

"That’s about all we get out of life, rich or poor, isn’t it, a few hours of enjoyment here and there? I think it is folly to allow a single chance for pleasure to slip past you."—Aimée Crocker, 1911

From the acclaimed author of The Arctic Fury and The Magician’s Lie

Tearing through millions of dollars, four continents, and a hearty collection of husbands, real-life heiress Aimée Crocker blazed an unbelievable trail of public notoriety, private pain, and the kind of strong independent woman the 1880s had never seen.

Her life was stranger than fiction and brighter than the stars, and she whirled through her days as if she was being chased. Greer Macallister brilliantly takes us into a world you won’t soon forget.

Critic reviews

“A whirlwind tour of the life and loves of the incomparable Aimée Crocker. Macallister deftly captures the raucous, devil-may-care attitude of a woman who wasn’t afraid of scandal, while also beautifully depicting her more vulnerable side—especially when it came to matters of the heart. A truly wonderful read.”—Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author of The Spectacular

Aimee’s exploits are almost unbelievable but wow, what a life she led in a time that framed her exploits in the newspapers of the time. Historical events were part of this rich girl’s life & she had the funds to do anything she imagined. Sad in so many ways…

Unbelievable but compelling listen!

It was mostly holding my interest until the Aleister Crowley part. I’m not in the least interested.

She led a decadent life.

I knew nothing of Amy/Aimee’s life but thoroughly enjoyed all of her amazing and sometimes outrageous adventures. At the end, I was shocked to find most of the book was true. I also realized that I liked her, even though she, at first read, could seem unlikable. Well worth the time to escape into a lost time just like “Aimee” escaped in her wild life!

Poignant and outrageous, sad and amazing!
