About this listen

The thing about Jane Spring is...at 31, she has everything a woman could ask for and seemingly everything a man could long for - great legs, brains, rising star status in the Manhattan D.A.'s office - but she just can't find a man who'll fall madly in love with her. Men are always asking her out, but for some reason no one wants a second date. So what if she's neck-breakingly assertive and somewhat callous? This is the 21st century. Right? Maybe not. But what is it that men really want in a woman after all?

One snowy night after a bottle of wine and a Doris Day marathon on cable, it hits her: Doris Day always got her man. So Jane Spring trades in her nondescript black pantsuit and clunky diver's watch for pastel pink suits with pearls and pumps, she changes her hair, stops cursing, starts wearing makeup, sweetens her mannerisms and redecorates her whole apartment. And soon her life really does begin to change. Not only does her lazy secretary start working, but everyone seems to be kinder and gentler...and she's got men lining up around the block. But can she keep her inner attack dog on hold long enough to win the most important case of her career...and the man of her dreams?

Sharon Krum's magical and hilariously funny novel is a delightful romantic comedy about a driven young woman who must shed her rough exterior and embrace her inner ultrafemininity in order to truly find herself and, eventually, true love.

Critic reviews

"A charming modern fairy tale with all the essential chick-lit elements: witty banter, quirky secondary characters, dueling love interests, and personal makeovers. This frothy summer confection will please fans of single-in-the-city comic romance." ( Booklist)

A refreshing story with insights into the mistakes so many career women make with men.

Fun and enjoyable

I thought this was light and fun- especially if you love watching Dorris Day movies. This has been one of my favorite Audible selections so far! I stayed up late a few nights wanting to hear how Jane and her court case would fare. Hope to see more from this author.

Fun!

In the end, after many hours, I appreciated/enjoyed this book. But it took a lot for me to sit through the first half--I did not identify with the main character and actually found it really really really annoying to listen to the narrator's biting, harsh voice. As the main character shifts towards the positive, so did my interest in the novel. But this is for readers with patience, or who want something pretty light (aka not incredible) to pass the time on a long drive.

it's ok

I absolutely loved this book, it made ME want to hit the vintage stores and become Doris myself.

I ended up staying up half the night to finish listening to it.

Doris Day - Yay!

I am also a major Doris Day fan and found this book hilarious. It encouraged me to rent some of her TV shows and movies, to see her from the author's perspective, and I was not surprised that she seemed right on target. It was also great tp see the wonderful fashions of that era.
I hope Sharon Krum writes more, maybe about other movie stars such as Elizabeth Taylor?

If you're into romantic comedies, this is the book for you. Apart from the usual girl meets boy storyline, the comedy throughout the book keeps you entertained. It may be that the funniest parts are those that most women have experienced, just never put that experience into words or never say the comedy in the experience. You'll love it!

Hilariously Entertaining

Just like Doris Day - a smile just appears on your face and stays there throughout the book. Yes, it is totally frivolous, but a wonderful, entertaining read with a good theory. Think about who you are and what you would like to change. Maybe you don't want to be Doris Day, but then............who knows!!
