About this listen

Fragment to this story:

Henry and I drove in silence, back to the house. I needed to take a shower and sleep some.

I kept on playing Dr. Tanaka’s words in my head, like a broken record.

Over and over.

“So! The truth now. What did the good doctor had to say about Louis’ condition?”

I sighed and said, “Well, he didn’t really say much, one way or the other. I can see where he’s coming from, not to give me false hope. He was cautious but remains optimistic. Louis is in what they call the ‘Vegetative State,’ which is the middle of three levels of commas.”

“I see. So it’s not that bad… er… my… friend… back at the hospital said, and I quote, ‘There are lessons to be learned on both sides of reality. Life can be just a dream for the living, while it can be a very tangible truth for those who slowly drift away from reality…’ Very deep, if you ask me…”

I turned to look at Henry.

What?”

“There’s more! And I quote again… ‘The gentle creature came to a forked road; he had choices to make. He has chosen Life. That was a wise decision, there are still many significant tasks to experience and accomplish. He will go back to the protector. Only many great things can come out of that association.’ ”

“What are you saying? What friend at the hospital?”

Henry had a big smile on his face, “Don’t you see it J.J.? Louis is coming back to us!”

“Ooohhhh… no, no, no, no… Don’t tell me you are taking about your creepy friend the Grim Reaper…” I said, starting to get really angry, “I have asked you over and over again NOT to talk to me about that shit, Henry!”

Henry crossed his arms and looked out the window.

“Grown-ups never understood anything by themselves. And it is rather tedious to have to explain things to them, time and time again,” Henry turned to look at me and added, “And THAT is a quote from ‘The Little Prince.’ Think about it on your way home, young man.”

He flickered himself out of the car.
