About this listen

In a small Arizona town, a man counts his blessings: a loving wife, two teenage daughters, and a job that allows him to work at home. Then "The Store" announces plans to open a local outlet, which will surely finish off the small downtown shops. His concerns grow when "The Store's" builders ignore all the town's zoning laws during its construction. Then dead animals are found on "The Store's" grounds. Inside, customers are hounded by obnoxious sales people, and strange products appear on the shelves. Before long the town's remaining small shop owners disappear, and "The Store" spreads its influence to the city council and the police force, taking over the town! It's up to one man to confront "The Store's" mysterious owner and to save his community, his family, and his life!

I enjoyed every page from start to end. The characters are believable and easy to connect to, but there is no wasting of words on overly descriptive and unnecessary details of their personal environments, relationships or conditions. The delightfully, creepy thing is how this tale drew from that little, dark place in my mind that tells me 'this could happen here; could almost be happening now'. From that aspect, it was a bit reminiscent of some of Stephen King's novels, you know, like it could be my town, my neighborhood.

Never a dull moment

This is only the second book I've read from Bentley Little (The Resort was first), and I feel I'm really catching my stride with his writing. The Store is an interesting and demented take on our country's Walmart-complex and how far we're willing to go for the lowest prices and convenience. At least on the surface. Under the creepy surface is a smart social study of community in a time of fear and struggle. Visually disturbing moments of pure shock, good characters and terrifying Night Managers round out what was indeed a very enjoyable story.

This was so weird. I couldn’t stop listening. At first the readers voice seemed cold and over articulated, but as you get deeper into the story it is perfect. Well done

So creepy

Well developed characters, excellent pace, a nice overall Horror Story from start to finish. There were times where I had to turn audible's off because I felt so much dread for the town of juniper and the characters. when a story can impact you that much, that is a sign of a successful story.
Well done! I can't wait to read another one of his books :)

Wow!! I can see why this won the Bram Stoker award

I'll be looking for more by this author. We've all heard the complaints from small towns about the economic devastation wrought by the big box stores (Wal-mart, we're looking at YOU). The big store moves in and suddenly everyone is flocking there and bypassing the old mom and pop establishments, leaving a ghost town in its wake. What if the force behind it isn't just a capitalist with a great idea but a supernaturally evil being? Readers, hang onto your hats, it's going to be quite a thrilling ride with an ending you won't soon forget (warning: there's an element of incest near the end, discretion advised).

Why hasn't someone made a movie out of this book?!
