About this listen
25 Steps to Found and Scale a High-Growth Business
The Startup Checklist is the entrepreneur's essential companion. While most entrepreneurship books focus on strategy, this invaluable guide provides the concrete steps that will get your new business off to a strong start. You'll learn the ins and outs of startup execution, management, legal issues, and practical processes throughout the launch and growth phases and how to avoid the critical missteps that threaten the foundation of your business. Instead of simply referring you to experts, this discussion shows you exactly which experts you need, what exactly you need them to do, and which tools you will use to support them - and you'll gain enough insight to ask smart questions that help you get your money's worth. If you're ready to do big things, this book has you covered from the first business card to the eventual exit.
Over two-thirds of startups are built on creaky foundations, and over two-thirds of startup costs go directly toward cleaning up legal and practical problems caused by an incomplete or improper start. This book helps you sidestep the messy and expensive cleanup process by giving you the specific actions you need to take right from the very beginning.
- Understand the critical intricacies of legally incorporating and running a startup
- Learn which experts you need and what exactly you need from them
- Make more intelligent decisions independent of your advisors
- Avoid the challenges that threaten to derail great young companies
The typical American startup costs over $30,000 and requires working with over two dozen professionals and service providers before it even opens for business - and the process is so complex that few founders do it correctly. Their startups' errors often go unnoticed until the founder tries to seek outside capital, at which point they can cost thousands of dollars to fix...or even completely derail an investment. The Startup Checklist helps you avoid these problems and lay a strong foundation, so you can focus on building your business.

Rand Fishkin, the founder and former CEO of Moz, reveals how traditional Silicon Valley "wisdom" leads far too many startups astray, with the transparency and humor that his hundreds of thousands of blog readers have come to love. Everyone knows how a startup story is supposed to go: A young, brilliant entrepreneur has a cool idea, drops out of college, defies the doubters, overcomes all odds, makes billions, and becomes the envy of the technology world. This is not that story. It's not that things went badly for Rand Fishkin; they just weren't quite so Zuckerberg-esque.

They say you shouldn't ask your mom whether your business is a good idea, because she loves you and will lie to you. This is technically true, but it misses the point. You shouldn't ask anyone if your business is a good idea. It's a bad question, and everyone will lie to you at least a little. As a matter of fact, it's not their responsibility to tell you the truth. It's your responsibility to find it, and it's worth doing right.

Should be a made into a part of the school curriculum
Though David is the grandfather of startup culture he is very up to date with new technology while having a veteran overview of the business ecology. He gives both advice for the small entrepreneur to the well established. Running a business and a startup is a complicated process and David brakes it down into simple areas with both practical and available solutions. Having been through most of the startup mistakes of missing the timing, having gone bankrupt and other involuntary business failures, David is wise and understanding. Would recommend to all interested in business :)

Checked all the boxes
As a former executive now turned startup CEO I found this audio highly informative. So much so that I listened to the entire audio twice in two weeks.

Thank you David S. Rose
David’s insights are second to none. He has played with over 100 startups but has the data to talk and walk the talk. Entrepreneurship can be a lonely and daunting experience but it doesn’t have to be - find a mentor like David within the ecosystem. So many gold nuggets were dropped - I’m going to have to listen again. From sole trader, safe or convertible note - takes notes and listen to what’s being said. I wish you all the best in your entrepreneurial endeavors and stay tuned.

Getting kick-started in the right direction!
Valuable book to give you a detailed holistic view of what it takes to create a company from scratch. The book was very well organized and the right amount of time was spent on each topic within the chapter.
This book will make a good reference to go back to as you progress along the start-up journey.
