About this listen
This audiobook combines the three postapocalyptic adventure books of the Solitary Man Series. Look around. Millions of preppers are working feverishly every day to get prepared for what they fear is a disaster about to happen in America. The motivation for preparing differs for each person. Donald is getting his farmstead prepared in case a predicted solar storm takes out the electrical grid. Some folks might call what Donald is trying to create as a bug-out location. Other people consider his little rural house as an effort to become more self-sufficient, like a homesteader. Donald can agree with both lines of thinking, but the way he sees it, it is going to be his own safe haven or refuge from the NASA predicted solar storm.
This book focuses on building a bug-out location from scratch, with permaculture and disaster psychology.

Story
At 58 years old, Jeff Mann had read dozens of those apocalyptic sci-fi novels, and all were wrong. The cause was the incompetence of the world's governments and the failure of the many financial Ponzi schemes. First, the riots and looting came, and then starvation and depravity followed. The billionaires built safe compounds while everyone else died off or fought to survive the holocaust at the end of the modern world. Jeff begins a crusade against human trafficking after saving two women from slavers. Can one man and two women make a difference in a world gone mad?

Amid the leftovers of civilization, ex-Army Ranger Jason Larsen is reminded of the meaning of hope, family, and loyalty by a dog and a young boy who are as alone as he is. The survivors he seems to collect become family, and that is very bad news for those who think they run the apocalypse.

Everyone needs a Refuge
Feels like I am along for the ride as a solitary man outfitted, nutured and 'battened down the hatches' at his refuge in the event of Grid Down situation. It had me pondering my own preparedness in face of disasters, yet as with all Ron Foster's books, there are many tips and resources included with an engaging tale peopled with relatable characters.

More training manual than story.
Not a bad story just very plain and I see the author wanted to keep it on the low key compared to other such authors. But there was some good information that you can take away from the book [have a pencil & paper handy], the only thing that I completely objected to as a real life prepper myself, was what the characters intended to do in the final book when they had to bug out of their present bug out location onto another that they weren't sure of to its condition. I did find this type of mind set completely unacceptable personally.

Any additional comments?
While entertaining, the story was not a blockbuster. However, this book was packed with excellent information which is a must have for the prepper bookshelf. I look forward to more from Mr. Foster.

Done with Ron Foster Prepper Books
This was a painful, had to force myself to listen book. I had purchased one other of his short books that I didn't love... but my brother wanted to try this one... my brother is the prepper. The writing is just so poorly constructed, plot all over the place... he needs a better editor or to reread Strunk and White a few times. I found no new information here that I hadn't read elsewhere... and was miserable the whole time it was on.

Badly Constructed Narrative
I do owe Foster a thanks for introducing me to the world of 'preppers', and giving me something to chew over when it comes to why there are so many people looking forward to the apocalypse. However, as a novel, this is poorly constructed.
As with many fetishists, Foster makes the common mistake of believing his readers will share his obsession with preparing for the looming apocalypse. Consequently, he offers no insight for the mainstream reader into the hows or whys of people who have caught the 'prepping' bug. There's no context to the characters. In fact, there is very little effort to examine any of the characters' motivations. The plot flits around, clumsily interrupted with recipes, hints on prepping, and long digressions on different types of ammunition. The whole novel is dripping with a curious sort of schadenfreude towards the non-prepping majority, and there is no sense that the author was even aware of this.
Consequently, I was relieved when it was over.
