About this listen
Available for the First Time: The Complete Social Entrepreneur’s Playbook by Wharton professor Ian C. MacMillan and Dr. James Thompson, director of the Wharton Social Entrepreneurship Program, provide a tough-love approach that significantly increases the likelihood of a successful social enterprise launch in the face of the high-uncertainty conditions typically encountered by social entrepreneurs.
MacMillan and Thompson used their own systematic framework to publish The Social Entrepreneur’s Playbook. To test the market, they offered the first phase in their start-up method (step 1) as a free ebook. Readers were invited to join The Social Entrepreneur’s Advisory Group, and nearly 300 aspiring and active social entrepreneurs shared feedback that helped shape the complete edition of the book, which covers all three steps in the start-up to scale-up process.
Based on this crowd-sourced feedback from readers of the free ebook and drawing on the authors’ more than 26 years’ combined experience developing and studying social enterprises in the field across Africa and in the United States, this new edition provides guidance for each phase.
Filled with accessible frameworks and tools, as well as inspiring stories of social entrepreneurs, The Social Entrepreneur’s Playbook is a must for any aspiring or active social entrepreneur, as well as philanthropists, foundations, and nonprofits interested in doing more good with fewer resources.Gildan Media is proud to bring you another Wharton Digital Press Audiobook. These notable audiobooks contain the essential tools that can be applied to every facet of your career.

Story
As venture capitalist Alexandre Lazarow shows in this insightful and instructive book, this Silicon Valley "gospel" is due for a refresh - and it comes from what he calls the "frontier", the growing constellation of startup ecosystems, outside of the Valley and other major economic centers, that now stretches across the globe. The frontier is a truly different world where startups often must cope with political or economic instability and lack of infrastructure, and where there might be little or no access to angel investors, venture capitalists, or experienced employee pools.

Story
Donors, leaders of nonprofits, and public policy makers usually have the best of intentions to serve society and improve social conditions. But often their solutions fall far short of what they want to accomplish and what is truly needed. Moreover, the answers they propose and fund often produce the opposite of what they want over time. We end up with temporary shelters that increase homelessness, drug busts that increase drug-related crime, or food aid that increases starvation.

Quite thought provoking. I will definitely listen to this repeatedly for a while. I only wish the sample size of successful case studies was larger and especially discussing non agrarian enterprises.

the best, most practical book on social enterprise
this book didn't look like much on the cover but it represents many years of on the ground, concrete experience by the authors and the social entrepreneurs they have worked with. I have read other books on social entrepreneurship and some have been hopeful stories of other social entrepreneurs but others have been high-level abstractions by people who are fans of social Enterprise but not practitioners. This book takes you through a very disciplined step by step process with concrete examples and very helpful questions at the end of each chapter. I cannot recommend this strongly enough if you are practicing social entrepreneurship, teaching about it, or just interested in learning more about the realities.

Even better in hard copy
Just finished this book and learned a lot but I think it would be nicer to have a hard copy because there are lots of lists and frameworks that would be helpful to refer back to and see drawn out. Tough to do with time stamps and such in audio format.
