About this listen
Are you ready to embrace universal law and live a natural life? If there is one overall message to this book, it is that we must avoid being overwhelmed by life, to realise that there is something larger than us which is willing to shoulder the burdens. If we can live by faith instead of fear, we have found the secret door to success that she speaks of. Scovel Shinn devoted her life to helping people recognize the link between their attitudes and their level of happiness. A relaxed state of expectancy, she taught, is the best mindset for bringing success into your life. Sometimes, intensity of desire can actually turn away any good fortune because it suggests faith only in yourself and not in the higher power which has created you. Scovel Shinn describes prayer as telephoning to God, intuition, she says, is God telephoning you. She also says for example Your big opportunity and big success usually slide in, when you least expect it. You have to let go long enough for the great law of attraction to operate. You never saw a worried and anxious magnet. It stands up straight and hasn't a care in the world, because it knows needles can't help jumping to it. The things we rightly desire come to pass when we have taken the clutch off. We are so used to our daily life habits and patterns that we can find ourselves in ruts; we cease to be aware of the opportunities that arise through being fully present in the moment, and we stop expecting great things. By listening to and understanding this audio book you can and will change your outlook and life success.

Story
Florence Scovel Shinn taught metaphysics in New York for many years. Her meetings were well-attended and in that way she was the means of bringing the message to a considerable number of people. She herself was very spiritual, although this was usually hidden behind a matter of fact and carefree treatment of her subject. The technical or academic approach was not for her. She taught by familiar, practical, and everyday examples.

Story
Arnold Bennett’s classic book, How to Live on 24 Hours a Day, has been changing the way people use and consider their time since it was first published in 1910. In the intervening century surprisingly little has changed - we still struggle to make use of our time and are often plagued by the persistent worry that we are not making the most of our lives. Bennett encourages listeners to stop merely following the rote patterns of their lives and leverage their free hours by viewing time as a commodity like money - each of us is allotted exactly 24 hours every day to spend as we see fit.

I love Florence Scovel Shinn
Where does The Secret Door rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Why, why, oh why is there a guy reading this book?! I adored listening to The Game of Life read by the delightful Dixie Glassman. One of the minority of women metaphysicians & we have to have it interpreted by a man? I endured listening to dear Florence's message but PUBLISHERS: what a missed opportunity!
Who was your favorite character and why?
Florence herself. She is always entertaining, highly intelligent, convincing in her message, with a wonderful sense of humor.
Would you be willing to try another one of Florence Scovel Shinn’s performances?
???! This question doesn't make any sense! Unless you mean the book as 'performance'.
And no, not unless its read by a woman!
What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?
Quit worrying. Do unto others.
Any additional comments?

It was Disconcerting to hear a Man Narrating
a book written by a woman sometimes speaking in first person. I like some of Shinn's views about life and found the blend of Spiritualism and the Bible to be fascinating.
