About this listen
There is a deep, rich vein of spirituality running through The Scribe, a novel that resurrects the life of Luke the Evangelist. After the crucifixion of Jesus, in its immediate aftermath, a young widower and member of the Sanhedrin becomes disillusioned with the high priests and begins to adopt a Christian way of thinking. Forced to leave Jerusalem, he finds himself in a time that heralded the birth of the gospels.
The novel follows an array of characters both factual and fictional: Mary, the mother of Jesus, Jesus himself, the gospel writers, a mystical figure known as the Seer, and the Santos brothers, a seagoing pair from Hispania, among others.
Set against a background of countries that made up the ancient world, The Scribe shines a beacon of light on a period of history that changed us all forever.

Story
In ancient Rome, a woman flees for her life. Hidden beneath her blue cloak are secrets men will kill for - forgeries that prove the newly self-appointed bishops are pretenders who will stop at nothing to shape this new religion to their own ends. Two thousand years later, classical archaeologists Valentina Vella and Erika Simone stumble across an ancient parchment buried deep in the Vatican archives. To reveal Julia's legacy will put them in the crosshairs of a venomous Vatican battle for power and supremacy; to stay silent would make them complicit in an ancient heresy.

In the quiet Dutch countryside, 15-year-old Sofie returns home from school to find two armed men in her home. One is holding his rifle to her father’s temple, and the other is ransacking her mother’s purse. Though the Nazis find no proof that the family is Jewish, Sofie knows they have to leave. Although they find safety in a neighbor’s attic, they cannot stay there forever. Story
Was Mary Magdalene a prostitute, a female divinity figure, a church leader, or all of those? Biblical references to her are tantalizingly brief, but we do know that she was the first person to whom the risen Christ appeared - and the one commissioned to tell others the good news, earning her the ancient honorific "Apostle to the Apostles". Today, Mary continues to spark controversy, curiosity, and veneration. In a vivid re-creation of Mary Magdalene's life story, Margaret George convincingly captures this renowned woman's voice.

Story
Meryl Streep’s performance of Colm Tóibín's acclaimed portrait of Mary is hailed by the New York Times Book Review as “an ideal audiobook,” presenting the three-time Academy Award-winner in “yet another great role.” Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, Colm Tóibín's The Testament of Mary presents Mary as a solitary older woman still seeking to understand the events that become the narrative of the New Testament and the foundation of Christianity. In the ancient town of Ephesus, Mary lives alone, years after her son's crucifixion. She has no interest in collaborating with the authors of the Gospel. They are her keepers, providing her with food and shelter and visiting her regularly. She does not agree that her son is the Son of God; nor that his death was "worth it"; nor that the "group of misfits he gathered around him, men who could not look a woman in the eye," were holy disciples. This woman who we know from centuries of paintings and scripture as the docile, loving, silent, long-suffering, obedient, worshipful mother of Christ becomes a tragic heroine with the relentless eloquence of Electra or Medea or Antigone, in a portrait so vivid and convincing that our image of Mary will be forever transformed.

What a lovely surprise!
"I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review."
The Scribe is a work of fiction where the author mixes the facts we know of Luke from the Bible with other fictional characters and situations to draw a Luke and his life, from his birth, to childhood, adulthood etc.
The characters both real and fictional are pictured in such a way, that it's very easy for the listener to empathize with them, to love or dislike them. Even knowing that it's a fictional book, the stories are written so realistically, that you find yourself wondering how life must have been back then, at least for the real people that appear on the book.
I liked the premise of The Scribe, what I didn't expect was a story able to make me smile, a story that moved me and even inspired me at times.
The narrator did a good job too, and if I had to choose something I didn't like I'd say: the constant jumps in time, but it's something I don't like almost in any book anyway.

The Scribe
This was the first book of its kind (add on to the Bible with fiction) that I have read (listened). The wording, even for taking place way back in Jesus time, seemed a little weird at times, but some of the words made me chuckle, that is always a plus. The narration was done very well! Loved the deep voice. Well done Mr. Mullen and Mr. Swartzell.

Wonderful biblical story
This was a really wonderful book.
The author must have done a lot of research in order to write this novel. It’s more than just a novel, it’s in part biographies of the main people who were instrumental in writing and preaching the gospels. The biblical world was brought to life.
I particularly found the author’s description of paradise intriguing. How people continued to learn and gather knowledge and how there were vast libraries of people’s writings etc.
The book seemed to repeat in parts, but i think that was due to the time jumps.
The time jumps took some time to get used to, but it was all good once i figured out, that a particular time would be spoken of, and then revisited and expanded upon some time later.
The fictional characters helped to bring the biblical period to life.
The Narration was wonderful. It really helped me get in to the story and stay engaged.
If you are like me, and wonder, how people lived in the past, then I would highly recommend this book.

Remarkable!
This was a remarkable story not only about Luke the Evangelist but about the history of a time in history that changed many people forever. It is an interesting story on how life was for Christians in the time just after the Resurrection, however this story is fictional so keep in mind that there is fiction entwined with fact as you listen. There are many other characters from biblical history in the story, including Mary the mother of Jesus, Paul, Peter(Petrus) and John as well as many fictional characters thrown in as well. It is very well written and is well worth listening to. (One warning though, it does jump around in time so you must listen carefully to the dates at the beginning of the chapters to keep up.) I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will likely listen to it again sometime in the future. I will certainly recommend it to my family and friends. The narrator does a wonderful job, making the listening experience an enjoyable one.
