About this listen
Japan, 1703. On a snowy night, 47 warriors murder the man at the center of the scandal that turned them from samurai into masterless ronin two years before. Clearly this was an act of revenge—but why did they wait so long? And is there any reason they should not immediately be ordered to commit ritual suicide? Sano Ichiro, demoted from Chamberlain to his old post as Most Honorable Investigator of Events, Situations, and People, has mere days to solve the greatest mystery of samurai legend—while his own fortunes hang in the balance.

For those looking for the real story behind the fictionalized movie account of the 47 Ronin story, this is the definitive, fascinating account of this unforgettable tale of a band of samurai who defied the Emperor to avenge the disgrace and death of their master, and faced certain death as a result. It led to one of the bloodiest episodes in Japanese history, and in the process, created a new set of heroes in Japan.

Story
An exotic mystery set in 11th-century Japan....Akitada is on his way to the bedside of his dying mother when bad weather forces him to take refuge in a temple whose central treasure is a brilliantly painted hell screen. Perhaps its violent imagery influences his dreams: that night he is awakened by a terrible scream.
It's only after Akitada returns to his family and a scene of domestic unhappiness and scandal that the significance of that cry becomes clear.

Classic Tale With A Twist
Whay an interesting way to tell the classic tale of the 47 Ronin! LJR gives us a twisty, plot, interesting characters and involved plotlines that keep the pages turning. I enjoyed the narration as well.

Strong story in the series, performance ok.
This was a very strong novel in the series. I would have prefered a different narrator, but can't put my finger on why. It was a fine narration but nothing special. I would recommend geting it for the story, The narration is just a matter of my preference, but others may find it exceptional.

A Great Listen
I thought this book was great, I was a little apprehensive as it is the first book in the series that I have listened to (or read) and I was not sure if I was going to jump into the middle of a story. But you do not need to have read the previous books to enjoy this one. Any details you need are quickly filled in, and the story is stand alone for the most part. Anyone who has an interest in the 47 Ronin will enjoy this book. I found the narrator to be mostly excellent, although there were one or two voices I cringed at. Otherwise I would have given her 5 instead of 4 stars.
