The Lurking Fear includes examples of Lovecraft's earliest weird fiction including "Hypnos", "What the Moon Brings", "Imprisoned with the Pharaohs", and "Memory" (inspiration for the 2014 film of the same name), as well as the title story, "The Lurking Fear", a traditional horror study commissioned by George Julian Houtain to be run as a serial in Home Brew magazine in 1923 that has served as the source material for multiple films and been adapted into a comic book.

Richard Upton Pickman is a Bostonian painter, notorious for creating horrifying paintings. His ghoulish works are brilliant, but they're so graphic that his membership in the Boston Art Club is revoked and he finds himself shunned by his fellow artists. Then Pickman mysteriously disappears, and his friend finds himself on a mission of horror and evil to discover the truth.

A meteorite from cosmic space falls to earth on a backwoods Massachusetts farm. The space rock possesses peculiar qualities and mystifies even the brightest university scientists. But it soon becomes clear that this is no ordinary meteor, as its otherworldly influence unleashes a creeping wave of despair, death, and decay into the land and its inhabitants.

H.P. Lovecraft never found fame during his lifetime and died in 1937 in relative obscurity. But in the decades that followed his death, his importance as a unique and original visionary in the genre of science fantasy and 'weird fiction' has grown monumentally, so that even talents such as author Stephen King and film-maker John Carpenter have described him as a prime influence upon their creative lives.
