About this listen

In the early 1600s, many brave young women dared to travel over unknown seas to a strange land, hoping to meet and marry a Jamestown colonist.
This historical fiction novel depicts their bravery and struggles. The Price of Tobacco Jamestown Brides is based on facts and embellished with stories that reflect their lives.
This account of the Tobacco Brides brings the young women to life by delving deeper into their experiences and what they endured.
Prospective brides departed from England in a small wooden ship, taking a leap of faith that would result in a new start for a brighter future. They yearned to fulfill their dreams of owning their own homes, starting a family, and having control of their lives.
Some of their dreams turned into nightmares. Many women soon died from local diseases, malnutrition, tainted water, or complications of childbirth. A horrendous Indian massacre took the lives of many colonists. Of the one-hundred and fifty women who arrived in Jamestown, hoping for a new life, only about thirty survived in the next six years.
An Indian massacre in March of 1622 killed over 300 colonists, many of whom were the young brides.
However, through it all, the American Dream was born in Jamestown, Virginia.
