Brother Lawrence
About this listen
The Practice of the Presence of God is a collection of the teachings of Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection (Nicolas Herman, c. 1614 - 1691), a 17th-century Carmelite friar. The book consists of 16 short letters, a collection of spiritual maxims, four conversations written down by Father Joseph de Beaufort and a brief bio, most likely by de Beaufort. The theme of the work is the cultivation and development of an awareness of the presence of God. Lawrence's method of acquiring the presence seems to have required discipline and willpower at first, but once cultivated, it became effortless. The book became quite popular among both Catholics and Protestants, and was praised and recommended by, among others, John Wesley, Willard L Sperry, A. W. Tozer, and Hannah Whitall Smith.

Story
Brother Lawrence was a 17th century Christian who had a dramatic spiritual awakening at the age of 18. Seeing a tree in winter, his soul suddenly opened to the presence of God. Within six years he had entered a Carmelite monastery in Paris, where he worked chiefly in the kitchen, cooking and cleaning. He practiced a simple and natural method. He merely turned his attention to the Divine Presence available at all times during any activity. He reports that he was as fully present with God while washing dishes in the kitchen as he was when partaking of the sacrament in worship.

Story
Brother Lawrence, a 17th century cook and shoe repairman in a monastery in Paris, was known for his peaceful devotion to God. Though not formally educated, his life experiences in war and his humble service in the priory led others to look to him for wise counsel. His words were later collected into this marvelous short audiobook that has inspired Christians for centuries. The Practice of the Presence of God has been of great help to believers such as John Wesley and A.W. Tozer.

Story
The Interior Castle, also titled The Mansions, is a classic work of Christian mysticism by St. Teresa of Ávila. Published in 1588, the text serves as a practical guide for those who wish to achieve mystical union with the divine. Teresa viewed the soul as a “castle made of a single diamond”, which contains seven mansions or dwelling places. The concept of the immanence of God - who dwells in the seventh mansion - was central to her spirituality.

Story
The Interior Castle by St. Teresa of Avila presents a remarkable description of the entire spiritual life from the first release from mortal sin into sanctifying grace through the Mystical Marriage of the soul with Christ as a journey through what she called The Interior Castle. She sees the soul as a magnificent castle full of spacious and well-lit rooms or mansions, each of which leads deeper into the heart of the castle to the seat of the king.

Story
We all live at the mercy of our ideas, and nowhere is this more true than our ideas about God. The problem is many of our ideas about God are wrong. Not all wrong, but wrong enough to form our souls in detrimental and disheartening ways. God Has a Name is a simple yet profound guide to understanding God in a new light--focusing on what God says about himself in the Bible. This one shift has the potential to radically alter how you relate to God, not as a doctrine, but as a relational being who responds to you in an elastic, back-and-forth way.

Story
We are constantly being formed by the world around us. To be formed by Jesus will require us to become his apprentice. To live by what the first Christian disciples called a Rule of Life—a set of practices and relational rhythms that slow us down and open up space in our daily lives for God to do what only God can do—transforms the deepest parts of us to become like him. This introduction to spiritual formation is full of John Mark Comer’s trademark mix of theological substance and cultural insight as well as practical wisdom on developing your own Rule of Life.

Bro Lo shows us what it means to walk with God
His letters humbly show the reader how to walk with God. In the walk, we hear as well as talk with Him. The book helps us with Biblical principles understand what it is like to live with Him in a personal and intimate way.

4 stars
Encouraging and convicting book to spur people to never leave God alone, at night. during the day, when we are preoccupied or if we are in retreat. He has some rather strong opinions on how to pray and deal with health problems that are a little too black and white. overall, all Christians should aspire to actively delight in God and be aware of His presence continually until we die.

An Example of A Surrendered Life
What I loved most about this book was its simple practicality: Love God above all else! Brother Lawerence, shares the path to the presence of God. He encourages all while warning at the same time this journey is a continuing fight to keep God at the forefront of our lives; but the reward is worth the fight. Walking with God all day every day in sweet communion is the greatest treasure a servant of God can receive. I highly recommend this book for those that are sincerely seeking to dwell in the presence of God.
