A truly Beautiful Reading of Chekhov's story/
Where does The Party rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I love Chekhov and "The Party" is a truly wonderful piece of Slavic literature. I put it in my top 10
What did you like best about this story?
The contrast of the situation a party going on and the moment of the Heroines distress, Chekhov using this same theme in his great classic "The Cherry Orchard." In former the heroine using the situation to escape financial problem, in the Party she is escaping marital problems. It is Mankind's desire to be amused even when the situation calls for distress. The attitude of not wanting to see the train wreak coming.
Which character – as performed by John William Cawthorne – was your favorite?
There two Characters the wife and the husband, J.W. Cawthorne get into a slow rythm with this piece which is quite appropriate with the lull of a country setting. He acts out every roles and you can really tell which Charater is speaking and any given time which I guess is the difference between the British and American interpretation that I have heard. The narrator acts out each person.
If you could take any character from The Party out to dinner, who would it be and why?
The wife because of her breeding, education and background and her desire to be authentic when others are feigning feelings to put up a front.

Great story, Poor Narration
This is one of my many favorite Chekhov stories, but the narration and audio were distracting. The narrator enunciates to a fault and speaks quite formally for a short story of this kind. There is also a modest echo plus a minor hiss. I still enjoyed the story, which is a fine representative of Chekhov’s best works. The characters, internal dialog, dynamical private thoughts, all set at a party, is great Chekhov. The narration must be why this is priced at 63 cents, it is definitely not worth a credit. I will look for another version of this story on Audible.
