About this listen

The is the exciting - yet little known - story of the making of England in the ninth and 10th centuries, the years in which King Alfred the Great, his son and grandson defeated the Danish Vikings who had invaded and occupied three of England's four kingdoms.

At the end of The Last Kingdom, The Danes had been defeated at Cynuit, but the triumph of the English is not fated to last long. The Danish Vikings quickly invade and occupy three of England's four kingdoms - and all that remains of the once proud country is a small piece of marshland, where Alfred and his family live with a few soldiers and retainers, including Uhtred, the dispossessed English nobleman who was raised by Danes. Uhtred has always been a Dane at heart, and has always believed that given the chance, he would fight for the men who raised him and taught him the Viking ways. But when Iseult, a powerful sorceress, enters Uhtred's life, he is forced to consider feelings he's never confronted before - and Uhtred discovers, in his moment of greatest peril, a newfound loyalty and love for his native country and ruler.

What listeners say about The Pale Horseman

Highly rated for:

The Audiobook "the Pale Horseman" By Bernard Cornwell Is A Gripping Historical Fiction Novel That Continues The Story Of Uhtred, A Saxon Warrior Caught Between His Danish Upbringing And Loyalty To The Kingdom Of Wessex. The Story Is Praised For Its Captivating Narrative, Vivid Descriptions Of Battles And The English Countryside, And Memorable Moments That Bring The Brutal Warrior Culture Of That Era To Life. However, Some Listeners Found The Plot Repetitive At Times, With A Slow Start And A Weak Ending. The Confusing Names Of Characters And Places, As Well As Potential Historical Inaccuracies, Were Also Noted As Negatives. Overall, The Book Explores Themes Of Anglo-saxon History, The Viking Invasions, The Birth Of England, Warrior Culture, And The Intense Battles That Shaped The Nation's Future.

Awesome Book!

The show on Netflix brought me to these books. the show follows the book close enough you know whats going on and who the characters are. But is different enough that you are greeted to a whole new adventure. if you're someone who has not watched the show first you wil still love the book. A tale of Danes (vikings) without so much lore and has historical value. The narrator is absolutely AMAZING! Makes listening like watching a movie. Highly Highly recommend the book.
