About this listen
A brutal storm. A cryptic message. A life changed...forever.
Melody de Lyon's cozy New Orleans bookstore is her pride and joy - until a violent hurricane sweeps it all away. Forced to flee the storm by boat with her ailing grandmother, she wonders how she will ever pick up the pieces of this disaster.
Then, in a fevered state, her grandmother utters a cryptic message that sets Melody on the quest of a lifetime: “Go to White Castle.”
With nothing left to lose, Melody seeks out the old mansion - a beautiful Southern relic haunted by secrets. Once there, she finds Britt Mandeville, the handsome and charming White Castle caretaker. Fireworks erupt between them, and Melody's attraction is stronger than she has ever experienced with a man before, but any hopes of a relationship between them are dashed when she discovers that Britt is already engaged to another woman.
When Melody stumbles across a strange 60-year-old photograph in the house, she is determined to find answers - and the shocking revelations and strange twists of fate lead her right back to Britt. Can she put all the pieces of the puzzle together, or will family secrets and true love be lost to her forever?

romance, secrets, a mystery
I don't like love triangles that involve sisters. I really enjoyed the narrator so I kept listening. Once I "forgot" that it involved sisters I was able to really enjoy the developing romance between Melody and Britt. I did think he moved on really quickly but he seemed truly crazy about Melody. Melody kept getting bad news and bad news. Their connection involved more than attraction - loved how the grandmother and his house came into play.

The damsel meets the plantation owner
I really enjoyed this story. In the midst of a storm, Melody loses her store, her apartment and her grandmother's home. With her grandmother in the hospital, she has nowhere to go. But her grandmother's urgent whisperings of "White Castle" send her on a journey to figure out its meaning.
Little does she know that when she gets there, she will discover both a mystery and her destiny.
Britt is enjoying being the caretaker of White Castle, while he runs his online business. It's a simple life that suits him well. His love of history is assuaged with all that surrounds him. But he's ready to take that next step in his life and get married. Too bad it's to the wrong woman!

Finding love through tragedy
Britt is swoony. Like Ohmylanta swoon. I loved his character and that he just made things happen. He pressed for answers and supported Melody when she needed time. Her sister was a piece of work. She needed a whole chapter of being told off and I was kind of bummed that didn’t happen. A southern story romance! Narrator was good. Loved her southern!

The story’s in the details
The plot idea seems good but the rendering is sophomoric.
Books on Audible should be professionally edited. I feel cheated when I’m caught up short in things like a character getting mud in their boots and a few paragraphs later, their tennis shoes are squishing with the wet.
Characters are on and off wooden and then believable. The female protagonist exhibits some seriously dangerous stupidity. That she makes it to the conclusion without losing the spectacularly handsome hero or killing her self by falling in the Mississippi or getting eaten by an alligator is just flat out amazing. I kind of wish she’d had.

Sweet clean romance
I really enjoyed this story. The author did a great job, with surprises throughout. The narrator was enjoyable to listen to and she did well with the different characters. No cliffhanger. The author presented a devastating situation with hope kept it an easy read. I didn’t feel overwhelmed or too anxious. The story flowed nicely.

Mixed Bag
I liked the depression history of the old home and the idea of the resilience of hurricane survivors.
The glorification of antebellum history makes me feel uncomfortable. The talk of the poor plantation wife forced to share with the evil northern aggressors is not a point of view that I agree with or enjoy hearing. (Union soldiers were generally heroes,in my opinion, who were mostly trying to protect the unity of our country and to free many of our citizens from the oppression of slavery.) This POV took so much away from the book for me.
I am also tired of billionaires.
It made this book less than stellar.

Captivating!
This story pulls you in from the very moment it begins. Two victims being rescued in a flood after a hurricane in Louisiana, words whispered near death and a mansion on a hill. How do they all connect? This is truly a captivating story written by Kimberley Montpetit and beautifully narrated by Reagan Boggs. I received this audiobook ARC from Sweet Sounds Audio and chose to leave a review. I found this to be a total Gem with a perfect balance of history, mystery and romance. I loved it!
