Sarah Arcuri
About this listen
From Italian American social media sensation Sarah Arcuri (@thesweetpaisana) comes a dazzling debut novel full of love and passion, Puccini operas, and mouthwatering Italian cuisine.
It is 1985 in New York City, and Scarlett Ciccone is a young woman who knows neither her worth nor her culture until she steps foot inside Valenti's—Little Italy's hottest restaurant. While Scarlett is eager to learn the ropes of the restaurant business, she gets more than she bargained for when she meets the two Italian-born brothers who own one of the most sought-after establishments in all of Manhattan. Charming and magnetic, Enzo is the personality behind his eponymous eatery, while his younger brother Francesco, a wildly talented chef, prefers to stay behind the closed doors of the kitchen. What ensues is a love triangle founded in a fierce rivalry between brothers with Scarlett's heart at stake. Soon she'll have to choose between the brother with whom she had an instant connection, and the one who tries to cook his way into her heart, all while discovering who she truly is and what it means to be Italian.
From the lively streets of Little Italy to the crystal blue shores of Montauk to the dazzling casinos of Atlantic City, The Owner & The Wife is the story of three perfectly imperfect people who learn to reconcile with their pasts, face the consequences of their choices, and step into the truest versions of themselves. Complete with a cast of vivid, deeply human characters, rich settings, and an immersive experience of Italian American culture, The Owner & The Wife delves into the behind-the-scenes of the restaurant industry, the visceral complexities of relationships in all their forms, and above all, the transcendent power of true love. A stunning debut, Sarah Arcuri crafts an irresistible tale that will leave listeners with their hearts full and stomachs growling.

Holden Henry is every girl’s dream—kind, funny, outgoing. A catch in every sense. Despite my wrong-side-of-the-tracks upbringing, he’s been my friend forever. He has no idea I’ve had more-than-friends feelings for him for years, and I intend to keep it that way. When I’m forced to return to the small town where we grew up, I’m faced with a big, fat problem. Being a good pal, Holden offers me a too-tempting solution: a marriage of convenience. It’s a crazy plan...but I’m desperate enough to try it. Besides, he’s not just saving me; we’ll be helping each other.

The way it brought you into the story was impeccable. I love that it was set in the 80’s.
I would have liked the narrator’s to be female for the women and male for the men instead of a female inflected male voice.

Well developed, likeable characters you root for!
The story pulls you in, Scarlet is incredibly endearing. Right from the beginning you feel for her, the way the story unfolds and you meet each character you feel drawn further into her world. There is a little bit of everything in this book, I adored the food they described and ended up googling recipes to see what it was they were talking about. There is an undertone of wonderful real traditional values that come through in this story, how we all strive for acceptance and approval with the bonus of becoming successful, but overall being valued and accepted for who you are in life. It’s a very charming story, one that I needed to find out what happens next yet didn’t really want to finish the book too fast and nothing else to read after - Enzo and Francesco were such vibrant characters you could also imagine how they moved and carried themselves. I hope Sarah writes more (and fast) I could see this book and characters like she has written becoming a movie or actually a tv series. I loved this book about true love, family, children and food!
