About this listen
Theo Benton decides to move to the United States to finally finish her novel, and she is soon drawn into a literary labyrinth where identity is something that can be lost and remade for the sake of sales and readership.
When her mentor and lover is brutally murdered, Theo wants the killer to be found and justice to be served. But when the prime suspect turns out to be her older brother, Gus, Theo does what is necessary to protect him—to save him. Then she disappears.
But the writer has left a trail, a thread out of the labyrinth in the form of a story. When Gus finds that thread, he follows it, and in attempting to find his sister, inadvertently, or perhaps recklessly, threatens the foundations of the labyrinth itself. In order to protect the carefully constructed deceit, Theo Benton, and everyone who ever looked for her, will have to die.

Story
By early 1960s standards, Margaret Ryan, Viv Buschetti, and Bitsy Cobb, suburban housewives in a brand-new "planned community" in Northern Virginia, appear to have it all. The fact that "all" doesn't feel like enough leaves them feeling confused and guilty, certain the fault must lie with them. Things begin to change when they form a book club with Charlotte Gustafson—the eccentric and artsy "new neighbor" from Manhattan—and read Betty Friedan's just-released book, The Feminine Mystique.

Story
The double murder of a married couple in a small Washington town draws FBI forensic linguist Raisa Susanto into an investigation that mirrors a decades-old crime. Twenty-five years ago—to the day—Alex Parker murdered his parents, then took his own life, leaving behind a note admitting everything. Raisa, paired with forensic psychologist Callum Kilkenny, uses her skills to read between the lines. Especially now that paranoid postings on a conspiracy thread suggest that Alex was a victim himself.

Awesome Reading Journey
This was my first book by this author. I listened and read a copy borrowed from my public library. This book had so many twists. The author set you up for the conspiracy. The character development was superb.

Confusion of story
The characters were well defined. The story began to drag around hour 4. At the 5th hour, I skipped ahead. Some of the story was obtuse. Couldn’t remember why he kept quoting a particular group, nor how the heroine could be clueless about those making crazy demands. So, it wasn’t a favorite for me.

Far fetched
I wasn’t a fan of this one. The plot was a bit ridiculous. I mean, who would do all that?

unexpected ending. loved every min of it!
I purchased this book on a whim looking for something different and it surprised me how in depth it was. The twists and turns all the way up the end.. wow. I don't want to give any spoilers but I had to back it up a few times to re- listen to a couple sections because I was worried I missed something important. Good listen!

Story
I enjoyed this one … with a few caveats
I truly loved this story up until the last 10-12 chapters. I’m still giving it 4 stars because the ending doesn’t “ruin” the book and the final conclusion is satisfying. That said, everything gets a bit … overblown and “off the rails” after Chapter 30 IMO. I’m trying not to spoil anything but I think the ending could have been so much better if the solution was uncovered & resolved in a much shorter time frame (I mean the story time frame, not the pages) & without all the unnecessary world travel.

Terrible waste of time.
Lead character makes bad decisions one after another and causes all the trouble she gets into. I was hoping she would get killed off but the entire storyline was as dumb as the characters and never redeemed itself.

Idk, Maybe It Would be Better to Read the Book
I was 2/3 of the way through this audiobook when I made the decision to return it.
Despite being 2/3 of the way through, I had no idea where the story was going and I could not see any end in sight for where I was in the story. It might have been that there was too much going on? We have a dead author with an unhinged fan base, a literary agent that is shady AF, plus chat room discussions and Doomsday preppers all thrown in to the same book? Add in a body count that increases through the story and no clues whatsoever. I suppose an author could make it work but that wasn’t the case here.
The thing that annoyed me the most about this book was the main character, Theodosia. The nice word to describe her would be naive, but I have never seen a character in a book be fed SO MUCH BULLSH*T by others and not question anything. Moreover, she questions nothing and THANKS the people who are feeding her said BS. She takes everyone else’s word for everything and then also kind of wallows in grief and self-pity and really doesn’t make any progress in solving her lover-mentor’s murder.
I may try reading this as a book because maybe it would be better reading at my own pace. But I was not impressed by the audiobook.
