About this listen

A gruesome murder in a cat rescue sanctuary splinters animal lovers and animal haters in a serene California mountain village. Village patrol officer, and animal activist, Holly Seabright, intrudes herself in the investigation to clear the name of the founder, a heroine among the animal rescue community.

Hot shot homicide investigator Dex Stafford battles a cat allergy and a dislike for a place without a Starbucks - or even streetlights. Nothing goes his way. He and his partner disagree over the course of the investigation.

A city boy in the countryside, Stafford pursues the killer, but the solution to the crime hits him from a direction he never saw coming.

Told with humor and a sharp observation of village life, the listener follows an unlikely pair of investigators in a prickly alliance through a case with a disturbing psychological twist.

I loved Mar Preston’s The Most Dangerous Species: Detective Dex Stafford Mystery, Book 2. Preston is a master of page-turning mystery, character description, and dialog. Holly Seabright, a patrol officer in Sierra Mountain Village, becomes embroiled in helping romantic interest, hunky Dex Stafford, to solve the murder of the husband of her close friend and cattery owner, Peach Bryson. Preston captures her characters (I especially love the eccentric ones) through spot-on, nuanced narration: “'Dude,' Leroy said, taking a step closer into her space. She could smell him. He exuded a sense of menace from somewhere behind his Old Testament beard.” Beyond the well-crafted mystery, I enjoyed the author’s dry humor threaded throughout, often making me laugh out loud. Preston provides a satisfying conclusion to the mystery, which unravels to a surprise finish. The audible version was perfectly performed - enjoyed every minute.
