About this listen
The number-one best-selling author of the blockbuster thrillers Airport and Hotel takes on the world of high finance.
Ben Roselli, president of First Mercantile American Bank and grandson of the founder, makes the shocking announcement that he's dying. With no offspring to inherit the company, Roselli knows that executive VPs Roscoe Heyward and Alex Vandervoort are the obvious candidates to succeed him.
Heyward, who has been with First Mercantile for two decades, will do whatever it takes to bring in new clients and win the coveted presidency. Vandervoort, a newcomer from the Federal Reserve with a left-wing girlfriend, advocates for a socially responsible plan of growth. And now the discovery of counterfeit cash and credit card fraud threatens the future of the bank itself.
From the day-to-day business dealings to the inner sanctums of the money trading center and the boardroom, Hailey's novel is a riveting tale of ambition, greed, and the US banking system.

“In wartime,” Winston Churchill wrote, “truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies.” For Britain’s counterintelligence operations, this meant finding the unlikeliest agent imaginable - a history professor named Alfred Vicary, handpicked by Churchill himself to expose a highly dangerous, but unknown, traitor. The Nazis, however, have also chosen an unlikely agent.

Spellbinder is the story of a genuine and charismatic believer simply known as "Preacher", who returns from the foxholes and horrors of Vietnam with a simple goal: to spread the word of peace, love, and charity. He immediately attracts a following as he moves from California communes to small surfing towns. "The Church", as his mobile flock is now known, is a culture that centers as much on sex and drugs as prayers, sacraments, and salvation.

Another good book
It is well researched book n the financial system, woven nicely through the characters and a well developed story. Financial crisis described in the book seem so pale compared to scale of today’s market manipulations.

Really Great Story!
This was so well written, detailed, insightful, wide-spanning on trade knowledge, and also touching on so many themes in psychology. Thoroughly enjoyed the 70s-era setting; it was such a comforting throwback. The narrator had an odd metallic voice that took some getting used to, but it obvious he took the true meaning of the author's words and emotions to heart when performing. That was nice.

Overwrought Dreck
This book isn’t as process-wonk good as “Hotel” nor as compelling as “Airport”.
It lapses into the nihilistic, cynical hedonism of the 1970s in Part II and the story just...stops. Hailey resorts to dumb teasers “little did he know that he’d see _____ again.”
Read Hotel and Airport. Leave this one alone.

Worst narration I’ve ever heard
Nearly unlistenable. I’ve read a few of Hailey’s books recently and while I don’t expect great literature, they’ve sort of been worth the time. With this book I found the narrator too distracting and it just isn’t worth it. Still, I always love the depth of knowledge the author brings to industries. Much like Michener made me learn so much history. Banking isn’t the same today but the nuts and bolts are fascinating.
